WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Kendall Coleman, Matt Ramos and Parker Filius all earned spots in the initial NCAA coaches' rankings that were announced on Thursday afternoon. Coleman checked in at No. 3, Ramos is spotted at No. 4 and Filius starts at No. 13 in the first of three rankings sets to be released prior to the NCAA Championships.
Coleman and Ramos are the first set of Boilermakers to be ranked inside the top-four at their weight classes at the same time since the NCAA began releasing rankings in 2012. The last pair of Purdue teammates to be placed inside the top-five simultaneously by the committee were Dylan Lydy and Christian Brunner in 2020.
The trio of Boilermakers bolster their rankings by being among the leaders in both matches and wins at their weights. Coleman and Ramos lead their classes in wins with 20 and 19 each while also having wrestled the most matches of anyone ranked inside the top-15. Parkers Filius (18) has the third most matches.
The coaches' rankings are determined by a vote of 14 coaches in each weight class with two head coaches from each of the seven conferences. For ranking purposes, coaches may only consider a wrestler that has been designated as a starter at a respective weight class. Wrestlers must have eight Division I matches in the weight class to be considered with at least one within the last 30 days.
The coaches rank and RPI represent two of the three requirements to earn a NCAA Championships qualifying bid for the conference tournament, with the third being individual win percentage. The first edition of the RPI will be released along with the second coaches' rankings in early February.
