LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Purdue freshman Matt Ramos won the U.S. Open senior freestyle title at 57 kg on Saturday, posting a 9-3 win over Anthony Moulton of Campbell University and Buies Creek Wrestling Club. Ramos is the first member of the Boilermaker Regional Training Center to win an Open title since former assistant coach Kendrick Maple won the 61 kg title in 2017.
Ramos advanced to the finals at 57 kg with a trio of wins Friday, where he was set to face Moulton, a long-time friend and high school teammate at Lockport Township High School. Ramos was on the attack early, getting in on a high-crotch shot and launching Moulton to his back for four quick points. The action continued as Ramos countered a throw attempt by Moulton and rolled him through for two more points. Moulton challenged the call as one official scored it as a four-point move for him, but they lost the challenge and another point, making it a 7-0 lead at the break. Ramos tacked on two more points in the second period, sealing the win.
With the win, Ramos earns a spot in the 2022 Senior World Team Trials Challenge tournament, scheduled for Mat 21-22 in Coralville, Iowa.
A second Boilermaker made his way on to the podium Saturday as freshman Hayden Copass earned fifth place in the U20 division at 125 kg. He wrestled four matches on the day, earning a placing spot with a quick 12-0 tech fall over LaRon Parks, securing his spot in the U20 World Team Trials with a 10-5, come-from-behind win over Aden Attao, and bouncing back from a consolation semifinal loss to earn fifth with a 9-2 win over Chase Horne. Copass will compete for a spot on the U.S. U20 World Team on June 4-5 in Geneva, Ohio.
Freshmen Stoney Buell and Hayden Filipovich advanced to the second day of wrestling in the U20 division, but fell short of the podium with respective blood-round losses at 74 and 92 kg.
