WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – As NCAA champions and Olympic medalists, Purdue alumni David Boudia and Steele Johnson have been selected among the 100 Greatest Men's Swimmers and Divers of the past 100 years as part of the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America's 100th anniversary celebration.
Boudia (six) and Johnson (five) have accounted for 11 of the 13 NCAA championships won by the Boilermakers under head diving coach Adam Soldati. Casey Matthews (2013) and Brandon Loschiavo (2021) accounted for the others.
Boudia and Johnson remain the only two divers in the country to win national titles in all three events – 1-meter, 3-meter and platform – at the NCAA Championships since platform was added to the meet in 1990.
The CSCAA is celebrating its 100 Greatest Swimmers and Divers, a compilation of the 100 most-accomplished college swimmers and divers across all divisions. Both and men's list and women's list were unveiled Tuesday. The process began with public nominations followed by vetting by a Centennial Executive Committee and decided by a panel of selectors. The CSCAA is also recognizing its 100 Greatest Coaches, 100 Alumni of Impact and a Centennial MVP Team – recognizing each university's top swimmer and top diver from each gender – over the course of this season.
Boudia was a two-time NCAA champion in all three of his seasons as a student-athlete from 2009 to 2011. Johnson won a pair of NCAA titles in 2015 and 2017 as well as a 3-meter championship in 2018. Texas' Troy Dumais (seven) is the only diver to win more championships at the NCAA level. Dumais competed at four NCAA Championships while Boudia and Johnson only did so at three each. Dumais was also among the CSCAA's 14 male divers on the full list of 100 honorees.
Headlined by their Olympic achievements, Boudia and Johnson are among the most decorated student-athletes across all of Purdue Athletics this century. They teamed up to win silver together for Team USA in synchronized 10-meter at the 2016 Olympic Games. Boudia's gold in 2012 highlights his career as a four-time medalist and three-time Olympian. Boudia (2008-16), Johnson (2016) and Loschiavo (2020) have given Purdue a 10-meter Olympian for Team USA at four consecutive Olympiads.
Boudia and Johnson maintained their presence at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center through the rescheduled 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, continuing to train alongside the numerous All-Americans that helped sustain Purdue diving's "Gold Lives Here" tradition of excellence. Boudia transitioned into an official assistant coach role with Purdue swimming & diving this summer.
Nearly 3,000 athletes were nominated for the CSCAA's 100 Greatest Men's Swimmers & Divers campaign. A blue-ribbon panel of current and former college swimmers, coaches and media members made the selections from a list of 973 finalists. Eighty-six swimmers and 14 divers were selected. They hail from 28 states and 13 countries. Highlights of the selections include 12 members of the International Swimming Hall of Fame and 59 Olympians.
Founded in 1922, the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), is the nation's first organization of college coaches. The mission of the CSCAA is to advance the sport of swimming & diving with coaches at the epicenter of leadership, advocacy, and professional development.
