WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Athletics and the John Purdue Club are excited to announce the commitment of the first leadership gift to the More Than A Game campaign due to the generosity of Jim and Jeannie (Darr) Chaney (BS '61, Pharmacy.)
"Purdue Athletics is truly grateful for the support of Jim and Jeannie Chaney in this time of most significant need," said vice president and director of intercollegiate athletics Mike Bobinski. "Their leadership gift exemplifies the sense of community we are so proud to have at Purdue and is a big step towards our goal of preserving the future of Purdue Athletics and our ability to provide our student-athletes with resources to succeed academically and athletically."
The "More Than A Game" campaign was launched to help the athletics department navigate the financial ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic, which includes a budget shortfall of up to or exceeding $50 million. As a self-sustaining athletics department not receiving taxpayer dollars, university funding, or student fees, the need for donor support like that of the Chaneys is more important now than ever.
"We have enjoyed many Boilermaker football and basketball games, and have met so many top-notch student-athletes. We are active and loyal supporters of the College of Pharmacy, but when we heard that the 2020 football season had been postponed, we thought about the significant cost to the university and the John Purdue Club," said Jim and Jeannie Chaney. "We had already pledged to Protect Purdue but we wondered how we could also support Purdue Athletics and the student-athletes through these difficult times. We are glad to add our support to this critical campaign."
With this gift, the Chaneys will be honored on the recognition wall that will be installed outside of Mackey Arena following the conclusion of the campaign. The wall will thank and recognize those who make contributions of $5,000 or more during Purdue Athletics' most significant time of need.
