SUGAR LAND, Texas – The season-opening weekend has brought Purdue Baseball back to a Triple-A stadium in Texas for the fifth year in a row as the Boilermakers host first-time foe Stony Brook to begin the new campaign.

It's a four-game series with a Saturday doubleheader as the Boilermakers take on a Colonial Athletic Association opponent for the first time since playing at UNC Wilmington in March 1985. First pitch is set for Friday at 4 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. (all times ET).

Constellation Field is the home of the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, the Houston Astros Triple-A affiliate in the Pacific Coast League. Purdue has compiled a 7-1 record at Constellation Field since 2022, sweeping South Dakota State two years ago and winning three of four vs. Holy Cross last season.

The Boilermakers are 4-0 in season openers under fifth-year head coach Greg Goff. They've also won six of their last seven openers since 2017. Purdue is opening its season in the same location for the first time since 2009-13, when the Big East/Big Ten Challenge was an annual event in the Clearwater-St. Petersburg area of Florida's Gulf Coast.

Purdue's 40-man roster features 23 returnees and 17 true newcomers. Most of the Boilermakers' experience is among its pitching staff, welcoming back eight pitchers that threw at least 20 innings last year. Of the 17 newcomers, 10 have prior Division I experience. Freshman pitchers Brayden Olson and Easton Storey were both among D1Baseball.com's top 20 Freshmen to watch in the Big Ten.

Graduate transfer Jordan Morales has earned the Opening Day start on the mound. The lefthander from suburban Philadelphia previously pitched at Penn State (2022-23) and La Salle (2020-21). He's set to become Purdue's first lefty since Jordan Minch in 2014 – and just the second this century – to be the team's Opening Day starter on the mound. The 2014 season also marked the only time this century in which Purdue started a lefthanded pitcher in its first two games of the season. With Jonathan Blackwell slated to pitch game 2 this weekend, it's in line to happen again a decade later.

Located on Long Island, Stony Brook made the move to the Colonial league in time for the 2022-23 school year. Longtime head coach Matt Senk led the Seawolves to the College World Series in 2012 when SBU was a member of the America East Conference.

STATISTICAL MILESTONES & NOTABLES FROM 2023
The Boilermakers went 6-2 on Fridays in Big Ten play, winning three consecutive series openers twice from March 24 to May 5. Purdue's April 21 series-opening win at Maryland made the Boilermakers the first visiting team to win on a Friday in College Park since May 2019.
Mike Bolton Jr. (74) eclipsed Purdue's all-time stolen base record on April 26, breaking a mark that had stood since 1991. He led the Big Ten with 28 steals, helping Purdue lead the league with 99 steals through the end of the Big Ten Tournament. Bolton and Couper Cornblum (26) teamed up for 54 steals, the second most by teammates in team history. Bolton has 17, 28 and 28 steals the last three years to put him in a select group with three straight seasons of 15-plus steals and consecutive campaigns of 25-plus.
Purdue had three players – Connor Caskenette, Couper Cornblum, Jo Stevens – with hit streaks of at least 10 games each for the first time since 2019.
Purdue used the same weekend rotation – Khal Stephen, Jonathan Blackwell, Kyle Iwinski – for every Big Ten series for the first time since 2009 and only the fourth time since 2001. They were a big reason why the Boilermakers won five of six weekend series from March 31 to May 7. Stephen opted to transfer to Mississippi State in July and was announced as MSU's Saturday starter to open the season.
The April 15 doubleheader sweep of Penn State at Alexander Field gave Purdue a third straight Big Ten series win at the midpoint of the conference season. The Boilermakers swept a Big Ten doubleheader at Alexander Field for the first time ever and rallied to win a Big Ten series at home after dropping the first game since April 2009. Aaron Suval closed out both one-run wins, making him the first Boilermaker with two saves in one day since the final day of the 2018 regular season. Purdue had not won a pair of one-run Big Ten games on the same day since May 2005.
Kyle Iwinski shined at home all season, compiling a 2.06 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and .214 batting average against over 35 innings. He pitched at least six innings in all five starts and the Boilermakers won four of the five games. He accounted for the best ERA at home by a member of the weekend rotation since 2016.

From the Countdown: A respected veteran presence in the bullpen, Cook is the longest-tenured member of the pitching staff – sharing the distinction with Griffin Lohman. When he took the mound in game 3 of the 2023 season, we all smiled as it marked his return from TJ. The 3-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree was closing games for us in 2021.

From the Countdown: Doorn earned a larger role as a sophomore & finished the season as Purdue's primary midweek starter. He struck out 5 of 10 batters faced in his 2nd outing of 2023 & didn't give up a walk until April. The summer of 2022 saw the NW Indiana native win Pitcher of the Year honors thanks to elite numbers – 0.88 ERA & 0.93 WHIP in 41 innings – in the Great Lakes Collegiate League.

He batted .400 with 63 RBI in his All-American season at Parkland College & homered in both Northwoods League playoff games for the Madison Mallards this past summer. Plus, he upgraded his number (from 37 to 13) for year 2 at Purdue.

Lukas Cook (Sr.) SS/2B/1B Knoxville, Tenn. Fall 2023
From the Countdown: Cook's walk-off homer to lead off the 10th inning of the rubber game vs. Northwestern was certainly Purdue's most memorable moment of 2023. Two days later, he hit another dramatic game-tying blast in the late innings vs. Evansville.
