Four Boilermaker Alums Set for World Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – Four Purdue track & field alums will compete at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, at Hayward Field from July 15-24.

EUGENE, Ore. – Four Purdue track & field alums will compete at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, at Hayward Field from July 15-24.
 
Devynne Charlton (Bahamas, 100 meter hurdles), Samson Colebrooke (Bahamas, 100 meters), Chukwuebuka Enekwechi (Nigeria, shot put) and Kara (Patterson) Winger (United States, javelin) will represent their countries, and the Boilermakers, at the world-championship event.
 
Winger is competing at her sixth World Athletics Championships and Charlton and Enekwechi are at their third. Colebrooke is making is world championships debut. All four also competed at last summer's Olympic Games in Tokyo.
 
Colebrooke will be the first Boilermaker race in Oregon. The preliminary round and heats of the 100m are on Friday, July 15, at 3:30 p.m. and 9:50 p.m. ET, and the semifinal and final are on Saturday, July 16, at 9 p.m. and 10:50 p.m.
 
A 2021 Purdue graduate, Colebrooke has a season-best 100m time of 10.01. He was 44th overall at the 2020 Olympic Games in the 100m in 10.33 as he made his Olympic debut. As a Boilermaker, Colebrooke was a six-time All-America honoree and five-time Big Ten medalist. He owns the second-fastest 200m (20.46) and third-fastest 100m (10.18) times in school history.
 
Enekwechi also begins shot put competition on Friday. The qualification round is set for Friday, July 15, at 9:55 p.m., and the final is on Sunday, July 17, at 9:27 p.m.
 
Currently a volunteer assistant coach with the Boilermakers, Enekwechi has a season-best shot put mark of 21.25 meters, and he was 12th in the finals in Tokyo last year with a throw of 19.74m at his first Olympics. He was a 12-time All-American and five-time NCAA medalist at Purdue from 2013-16. Enekwechi owns the school record in the shot put (20.37m) and hammer throw (72.77m) outdoors and shot put (19.95m) and weight throw (24.39m) indoors. His NCAA medals include two silvers in 2016, and he won 12 Big Ten medals, including four golds, and was a three-time Big Ten Field Athlete of the Year.
 
Winger's meet begins with the qualification round of the javelin on Wednesday, July 20, at 6:20 p.m., and the final is on Friday, July 22, at 9:20 p.m.
 
One of the most decorated Purdue athletes in any sport, Winger has a season-best javelin throw of 64.26m and she was 17th overall with a throw of 59.71m at the Tokyo Olympics. A four-time Olympian and eight-time USATF national champion, Winger is a 2009 Purdue graduate and was fifth at the 2019 World Championships, her fifth worlds appearance. She owns the Purdue (61.56m in 2008) and had the American (66.67m in 2010) records in the javelin. At the NCAA Championships, Winger won silver in the javelin in 2009 and was fifth in 2008, and she is a two-time Big Ten Outdoor Athlete of the Year. She won Big Ten javelin titles in 2005, 2008 and 2009.
 
Charlton will race next weekend, with the 100m hurdle heats scheduled for Saturday, July 23, at 2:20 p.m. On Sunday, July 24, the semifinal is at 8:10 p.m. and the final is at 10 p.m.
 
Ranked No. 6 in the world, Charlton has a season-best 100m hurdle time of 12.60 after she was sixth at her first Olympics, in 12.74, last August. The school record-holder in the 100m hurdles (12.70) and 100m (11.22) and a nine-time All-American, Charlton was a Boilermaker from 2014-18. Along with her Purdue records, she also holds the sixth-fastest time in the 200m (23.61). Charlton was the NCAA runner-up in the 100m hurdles in 2018 and in the 60m hurdles in 2017. She is an 11-time Big Ten champion and was named the Big Ten Track Athlete of the Year three times.
