WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue soccer team checks in at No. 18 in the national rankings as senior goalkeeper Marisa Bova was named the Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week and sophomore midfielder Emily Mathews was recognized on the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week on Tuesday.
The Boilermakers are ranked nationally in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 for the fourth consecutive week and at No. 18 for a second week in a row. Purdue debuted at No. 25 on October 5 and was No. 19 on October 12. The No. 18 spot in the poll is the team's highest since 2009, which also was the last year the Boilermakers were ranked before three weeks ago.
Purdue enters the Big Ten Tournament at 13-3-2 overall and 8-2-0 in Big Ten play, its best records since 2007. The Boilermakers' 13 wins are tied for fourth-most in a single season in team history, and eight Big Ten win are tied for their most ever, along with the 2007 squad. The team finished second overall in the conference standings, tied for its best-ever finish.
Coming off a 2-0 win over Indiana on Sunday to retain the Golden Boot Trophy for a seventh consecutive year, Purdue hosts Ohio State on Sunday, October 31, at 3 p.m. ET, in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinal. Tickets are on sale now as postseason play returns to Folk Field.
Bova earned Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week accolades after she had a pair of shutouts to close out the regular season last week. The senior has three clean sheets in the last four games, including a three-save performance on October 21 against Northwestern and a two-save day in October 24's regular-season finale against IU.
The Goalkeeper of the Week award is the third of Bova's career, as she becomes just the fourth player in conference history to earn more than two goalkeeper honors in a career. She was recognized twice in 2019, and also collected Freshman of the Week accolades in 2018.
An integral part of Purdue's success this season, Bova's strong play has seen her continue to rise in the program record books in numerous statistical categories. She moves into a tie for second in program history with 19 career shutouts, and her five shutouts this year are now tied for sixth-most. The Hartland, Wisconsin, native has 90 saves in 2021, up to No. 3 in a single season, and her 207 career saves continue to rank No. 5. In her career, Bova also remains second in goals-against average (0.89) and save percentage (.805) and fourth in wins (27) and minutes (5,086.36). She moves into a tie for fourth with 54 career starts. In a single season, Bova's 13 wins are No. 5 and the most by a goalkeeper since 2007, and she is third in save percentage (.849) and tied for sixth in goals-against average (0.87).
Mathews was recognized on the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week after she assisted on all three of Purdue's goals last week. Her week included a pair of game-winning assists and her first career multi-assist showing. Mathews now has a team-high-tying seven assists this season, tied for No. 9 all-time, and nine in her career.
The Old Gold and Black are No. 3 in the North Region ranking, and they are up nine spots to No. 18 in the latest NCAA RPI. Purdue also is No. 18 in the College Soccer News Top 30 Poll and No. 23 in the Top Drawer Soccer rankings.
The last time the Boilermakers appeared in the national poll prior to this season was when they entered the 2009 NCAA Tournament ranked No. 24. This week's No. 18 ranking, along with last week's is the highest since Purdue also was No. 18 on October 12, 2009.
One of three Big Ten teams in this week's poll, the Boilermakers are joined by No. 6 Rutgers and No. 17 Michigan, while Penn State is receiving votes. Additionally, non-conference opponent Notre Dame is No. 22.
Bova is the sixth Big Ten accolade Purdue has earned this year. Senior forward Sarah Griffith is a three-time honoree, with her first coming along with sophomore defender Nicole Kevdzija on August 31. Mathews was recognized on September 21, and Griffith earned Offensive Player of the Week distinction on September 28 and again on October 5.
Additionally, Mathews' Top Drawer Soccer award is her second, along with recognition on September 21.
