CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Purdue women's tennis team opened up play at the Illinois Invite facing Big Ten and in-state rival Indiana in a hidden dual. The Boilermakers utterly dominated the Hoosiers wins in seven of the 12 matches played.
Despite no team scores being recorded for the Illinois Invite, Purdue would have downed the Hoosiers 5-2, after dropping just a pair of contests in the nine regularly contested matches.
The Boilermakers steamrolled doubles play in the top three matches. Ena Babic and Csilla Fodor outlasted Jelly Bozovic and Annabelle Andrinopoulos at the top of the order to win 7-6 (5). Nathalia Wolf Gasparin and Zala Dovnik shut down Laura Masic and Mila Mejic in a 6-1 win. Seira Shimizu and Rut Galindo rolled in a tiebreak to defeat Alexndra Staiculescu and Sayda Hernandez 7-6 (2).
The only blip in doubles play came when Xiaowei Hu and Michelle McKamey topped Zeynep Naz Ozturk and Nikol Dobrilova 6-1. The match was the 2021 doubles debut for Ozturk and Dobrilova.
In singles action, Purdue cleaned the top four matches. Babic was headed to a third set with Andrinopoulos, before the Hoosier retired with the match at 6-4, 4-6.
Fodor cruised to a matching 6-3, 6-3 win over Staiculescu. Shimizu rallied from a set down with a pair of dominant frames to beat McKamey 6-7 (6), 6-0, 6-3. Dovnik wrapped up the Purdue singles victories with a come-from-behind performance against Bozovic, 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-3.
The Boilermakers will wrap up their hidden dual outing at the Illinois Invite tomorrow at noon ET against Illinois.
