NOBLESVILLE, Ind. – Purdue junior Joe Weiler parred the second hole of a playoff to defeat Indiana University's Jack Sparrow in the 119th Indiana Amateur Golf Championship held at Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville, Indiana.
The two players parred the first hole of the playoff after Weiler's second shot trickled to about six feet on the par-4 first. Sparrow chipped to a foot from the rough and Weiler's birdie attempt lipped out, sending the pair to the second playoff hole.
The two were in trouble off the tee as Sparrow found the rough and Weiler hit his tee shot into a fairway bunker. The two punched out to about 70 yards, when Weiler's approach shot settled about 15 feet from the hole, while Sparrow hit it into a greenside bunker. Weiler would then only need two shots for the win, but ended up making par to win the Indiana Amateur title.
Weiler finished with a 54-hole total of 8-under par 208 (67-73-68) to finish tied with Sparrow. The pair was three shots clear of third place.
Incoming freshmen Nick Dentino (4-under par) and Peyton Snoeberger (3-under par) finished tied for fifth and tied for eighth respectively. Cole Bradley was tied for 18th at 1-over par.
Weiler becomes the fourth Boilermaker in the last nine years to win the Indiana Amateur, joining Tyler Duncan (2011), Adam Schenk (2013) and Cole Bradley (2018) as recent winners. He is the ninth Purdue representative to win the event, joining Lee Williamson (2001, 2002), Ryan Cate (1997), Lenny Hartlage (1985), Joe Campbell (1954, 1955, 1956) and Fred Wampler (1947, 1949) as champions, in addition to Schenk, Duncan and Bradley.
