The Boilermakers had a strong start to the outdoor at the UTSA Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Purdue opened the season by adding six marks to the program top-10 lists.

Senior Savannah Carson opened her season with a win in the women's long jump. She had a wind-legal (+1.3) mark of 6.34 meters (20-9.50). Carson was also in the 100-meter dash and 4x100-meter relay. In the dash, she finished runner-up with a windy (+3.7) time of 11.47 seconds. In the relay, she ran the first leg and, with teammates Savannah Roberson, Yakira Love and Devynne Charlton, won with a time of 44.81 seconds. That time ranks seventh in school history.

Charlton made her 2018 Purdue debut and was a winner in the hurdles. The senior finished with a windy (+3.9) time of 13.29 seconds. Roberson was second in the event with a time of 13.75 seconds. Roberson was the winner of the 200-meter dash. Her winning time was a very windy (+6.0) 23.29 seconds. In that race, Charlton was fourth with a time of 23.67 seconds.

Senior Jahneya Mitchell won the women's 400-meter dash with an outdoor personal record. She finished with a time of 53.27 seconds, which is the fourth-fastest time in school history. Mitchell also anchored the winning 4x400-meter relay team that finished with a time of 3:39.33. She ran with sophomore Myia Dorsey, junior Kyelah Hodges and sophomore Samara Miller. Miller was also a winner in the 800-meter run, which she finished in 2:18.68.

Sophomore Waseem Williams had a great start to his outdoor season. He was runner-up in the 100-meter dash with a windy (+3.8) time of 10.19 seconds. In the 200-meter dash, he was the winner with a very windy (+4.2) time of 20.90 seconds.

Senior Symone Black won the women's 400-meter hurdles by more than two seconds. She finished with a time of 57.87 seconds, which is just off her facility record set last year at the same meet.

The throwers had a good overall season opener. Senior Sarah Loesch was runner-up in the hammer throw with a best mark of 57.47m (188-7). Senior Micaela Hazlewood won the discus, was second in the shot and third in the javelin and fourth in the hammer. Her discus mark was 53.39m (175-9), while her hammer distance was 53.53m (175-7). In the shot put, she had a mark of 15.33m (50-3.50). That ranks sixth in school history. In the javelin, she had a PR mark of 40.12m (131-8).

Freshman Molly Leppelmeier was third in the shot put. She finished with a mark of 14.87m (48-9.50), which is eighth in school history. In the hammer, she took third with a throw of 54.95m (180-3). Leppelmeier also added her name to the discus top 10 with a throw of 49.73m (163-2). That ties her for ninth in school history.

On the men's side, sophomore Ashmon Lucas won the discus. He threw 55.12m (180-10), which ranks eighth in school history.

The men's and women's high jumpers had a good day. On the men's side, freshman Rahman Minor and senior Eric Blackman both cleared 2.15m (7-00.75). Minor won the event with fewer overall misses. On the women's side, junior Janae' Moffitt won in her 2018 debut. She was clean through 1.80m (5-10.75).

Gabrielle Broschard ran away with the 3,000-meter steeplechase and won with a time of 11:05.24. She was 41.01 seconds faster than the runner-up and set a new Park West Athletics Complex facility record. Purdue had the top five spots in the men's 1,500-meter run. Sophomore Jaret Carpenter led the way with a winning time of 3:54.74. Kyle Griffith was second with a time of 3:56.81.

The women's team won the meet with 233.5 points, outscoring Texas Tech, Alabama and UTSA, among others. The men's team was second at the meet with 160 points, finishing ahead of Texas Tech, Alabama and others. UTSA was the winner on the men's side with 181.
