URBANA, Ill. - The Purdue men's tennis team was denied in the first round of the B1G Tournament with a 4-2 loss to fifth-seeded Indiana (18-10) Thursday at the Atkins Tennis Center. With the loss, the 12th-seeded Boilermakers' season comes to an end with a record of 4-20. The Hoosiers, ranked 44th nationally, advanced into a quarterfinal matchup with fourth-seeded Northwestern Friday.
Diego Acosta and Ricky Medinilla avenged last week's loss to Indiana's Sam Monett and Daniel Bedbarczyk with an 8-4 performance at No. 1, giving the Boilermakers the opportunity for an early advantage to claim the doubles point. It was the eighth victory for the senior/sophomore tandem.
It was perfect timing for Mateus Silva and Renan Hanayama to win their first match side-by-side. Their 8-4 decision over Hoosiers Sven Lalic and Raheel Manji in the No. 3 spot handed the point to the Old Gold & Black.
A 2-0 lead was built thanks to Acosta at the top of Purdue's singles lineup. The senior notched his 10th win of the spring, easily bypassing Sam Monette, 6-2, 6-1. That would prove to be all that the Boilermakers were able to muster as Indiana took Nos. 6, 4 and 2 in straight sets. Indiana's Matthew McCoy clinched the dual in straight sets at No. 5.
The loss closed the door on Acosta's career with the Old Gold & Black. Prior to the start of the B1G Tournament, Acosta was one of a dozen men's tennis student-athletes recognized as a Sportsmanship Award recipient. The Cuenca, Ecuador, native made the most of his final appearance for the Boilermakers by winning his doubles and singles matches Thursday. During his four-year career, he tallied a singles record of 64-51 and was 52-44 in doubles.
