SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
- MSU will wrestle at Indiana Friday before coming to West Lafayette for Sunday's dual to close out its B1G dual slate. The Spartans are 2-2 on the road. They won at Northern Illinois (27-6) and Eastern Michigan (18-16) and fell at Minnesota (36-3) and Iowa (37-0).

- Michigan State is the fifth unranked Division I team Purdue has faced this season. The Boilermakers are 4-0 against unranked teams and have outscored them 113-28. It is just the second probable lineup they have faced this season that does not feature at least one nationally ranked individual, SIU Edwardsville was the other.

- Of the Spartans 14 dual opponents, Purdue will be the 10th ranked team they have faced. They are 0-9 against ranked teams with the average score being 30.5-6.4.

- Javier Gasca and Garth Yenter started the first six duals of the season as the 133 and 141-pound starters, respectively, but have since switched roles. Gasca has twice been the 141-pound starter, including in MSU's last outing against Nebraska on Feb. 8 and Yenter has started the last two duals at 133. Both are 0-2 in their new roles.

- The starting job at 157 and 165 has also seen multiple changes. Travis Curley is projected to make his third start at 157 where he owns an 0-2 mark, while Roger Wildmo returns to the lineup at 165 for a fifth start after starting at 157 in the first nine duals of the season. Wildmo is 1-3 at 165.

- Mitch Rogaliner (125), John Rizqallah (184) and Nick McDiarmid (197) have been the mainstays in Michigan State's lineup. Rogaliner is 6-8, Rizqallah's seven dual wins (7-7) are a team-best and McDiarmid is 5-9.

- Of 70 B1G bouts, MSU has only won 10 (7D, 1 MD, 2 F). Rogaliner, McDiarmid and Nick Proctor (174) account for two wins each. A pair of the victories have been upsets with Rizqallah upsetting then-No. 13 Domenic Abounader of Michigan, 4-3, and McDiarmid pinned Nebraska's then-No. 15 Aaron Studebaker in 6:51.

LAST MEETING // JAN. 4, 2013 // EAST LANSING, MICH.
- The 21st-ranked Purdue wrestling team opened B1G duals in solid fashion, upending conference host Michigan State, 26-10, at Jenison Field House. The Boilermakers improved to 10-2 overall and opened conference duals with a victory for the second straight season as they captured seven of the 10 bouts, including three with bonus points.

SERIES HISTORY // MICHIGAN STATE

- Although the Spartans lead the series 47-24-1, the Purdue has won the last three meetings and in the last 10 years, has won six of the nine meetings ... the Old Gold & Black is seeking its fourth-straight dual victory over Michigan State, a feat that hasn't been accomplished since winning six straight from 1986-89.

- Career milestones Sunday: Braden Atwood will be seeking his 50th-career dual win ... Brandon Nelsen is seeking his 80th-career victory ... Nick Lawrence is after his 60th-career victory.

- There have been eight duals this season with all three Welch brothers in the lineup and in three of those duals, they were all victorious (North Carolina, Wisconsin, Northwestern).

- Through 16 duals, Purdue has scored 293 points with 11 different lineups. Sabatello, Lawrence, D. Welch and Pat Robinson (165) have wrestled in every dual.

- The Wisconsin dual (1/11) was the first and is the only dual so far in which the starting weight has been drawn. That dual started at 141. All other duals have gone straight up starting at 125.

- Purdue's wrestlers have combined for an overall dual record of 82-78 (.513). Through 16 duals, the Boilermakers have posted 61 decisions, 10 falls, six major decisions, three technical falls and have received two forfeits. RANKINGS NOTES
- For a fourth-straight week, the Boilermakers are listed in the USA Today/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll, checking in at No. 24 with 24 points.

- Braden Atwood has been ranked by InterMat for 54 consecutive weeks dating back to Oct. 28, 2012. After spending the last two weeks at No. 11 InterMat's 197-pound list, the redshirt senior jumped two spots and is back in the top 10 at No. 9. His career high by InterMat is No. 8, a spot he held earlier this season from Nov. 17 - Dec. 8.

- After spending two weeks at No. 14 on InterMat's 133-pound rankings, and thanks to his upset of then-No. 4 Zane Richards of Illinois, Sabatello jumped three spots to No. 11 in the Feb. 3 edition. He maintains that position, which is also the highest of his career, for a second-straight week. He has been ranked in eight out of the 15 weeks by InterMat.

- Doug Welch occupies a spot among InterMat's top-20 157-pounders for a fifth week, checking in at No. 11 after suffering a loss to then-No. 11 Brian Murphy of Michigan in his last outing.

- The last time three Boilermakers were ranked by InterMat was Feb. 17 - March 3, a span of three weeks, in Cashé Quiroga (133), Sabatello (141) and Atwood. Sabatello, D. Welch and Atwood have been ranked together for five weeks (1/12 - current).

- Fifteen weeks of rankings have been issued and 10 Boilermakers have appeared at least once in one of the five polls. There have been three weeks in which a trio of grapplers, Sabatello, D. Welch and Atwood, are ranked on all five (1/19 - 2/3).

- Purdue wrestlers have gone up against 89 ranked opponents and won 16 times (16-73; .180). Ten of the 16 wins were by an unranked Purdue grappler and six have been in head-to-head matchups. The Boilermakers are 5-37 when facing an opponent ranked among the top 10. Sabatello and D. Welch have a pair of those wins and Atwood has the other.

- D. Welch's 5-4 (TB1) upset of Nebraska's then-No. 2 James Green (1/9) stands as the highest ranked opponent that a Boilermaker has beaten this season. D. Welch, who was unranked at the time, also provided the program's biggest upset since 165-pounder Luke Manuel upended top-ranked and top-seeded Mack Lewnes of Cornell in the first round of consolation wrestling at the 2009 NCAA Championships, 3-1. Although Manuel was unseeded at NCAAs, he was ranked 15th when he beat Lewnes. Prior to that upset, D. Welch was 0-8 in his career against ranked competition.

- Sabatello carries a 6-3 record against ranked competition, including a 2-2 mark against those ranked in the top 10, all of which have been from the B1G. All of his wins have been upsets as he's beaten Nos. 4, 7, 12, 14, 15 and 19. His losses have been to Nos. 4, 7 and 14.

- In 32 matches this season wrestled by Boilermakers that are ranked by InterMat, they are 22-10 (.688). Of those 10 losses, four have been at the hands of an unranked opponent, two have been to a lower-ranked opponent and four have been to a higher-ranked opponent.

- Polls monitored, a complete list of recognized Boilermakers and their movement the past two weeks can be found in the dual notes.
