MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Purdue women's golf team opened its 2014-15 campaign with a sixth-place showing at the Minnesota Invitational, hosted by the Golden Gophers on Monday and Tuesday at the Minikahda Club. The Boilermakers posted a team score of 308-292-310=910 for the tournament, led by junior Anna Appert Lund who tied for eighth place in the individual standings at six-over par, 71-74-77=222.
"We played a great round yesterday afternoon, but we're going to need more consistency to accomplish the things we want to this season," said Boilermaker head coach Devon Brouse. "We have plenty of room for improvement and lots of work to do. We'll get back after it this week."
Appert Lund's performance was her best as a Boilermaker, turning in her first round under-par yesterday and finishing with her best-54 hole score by five strokes. She was unable to card a birdie on Tuesday, but earned par on 13 holes to log her third team score of the tournament.
After a disappointing opening round, freshman Marta Martin battled back in yesterday's nightcap and today's 18, shooting a team-best 76 this afternoon. Despite tying for the highest team score of the day on Tuesday, senior Aurora Kan managed a top-20 individual showing for the tournament, tying for 19th place. Sophomore August Kim turned in her first team score of the event on Tuesday, shooting six-over, 78, while senior Johanna Tillström matched Kan's seven-over, 79, and tied for 30th place in the individual standings.
The Boilermakers return to action on Saturday, heading to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the East and West Match Play Challenge at Radrick Farms Golf Course.
