Eoff, Schweizer Advance to U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying

May 13, 2014

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Purdue men's golf freshmen Austin Eoff and Philippe Schweizer each punched their tickets to U.S. Open Sectional qualifying on June 2 after earning two of the five spots handed out today in local qualifying at the South Bend Country Club.

Eoff and Schweizer join senior Adam Schenk and 2012 graduate Tyler Duncan as Purdue representatives at U.S. Open Sectional qualifying rounds. Schenk and Duncan earned their spots last week during local qualifying in Fishers, Indiana.

Schweizer, a native of Badeu, Switzerland, turned in an early round of 1-under par 70, then was forced to wait as nearly 80 more golfers needed to submit their scores. Schweizer played each nine in 35 strokes and recorded 13 pars, three birdies and two bogeys on the day. Schweizer took advantage of the three par-fives on the course, playing the trio of holes in 2-under par.

Eoff, meanwhile, was one of the last players to finish and finished second out of 95 golfers with a 3-under par 68. The Little Rock, Arkansas, native also performed well on the three par-fives, posting 3-under par on the three holes. Eoff had just one bogey on the day and recorded 13 pars on the afternoon.

Schweizer will join Schenk and Duncan in Columbus, Ohio, at Brookside Golf & Country Club and Scioto Country Club (18 holes at each course).

Eoff, meanwhile, will play 36 holes at the Colonial Country Club in Memphis, Tennessee, also on June 2.

Individuals will be playing 36 holes in one day in hopes of advancing to the U.S. Open at Pinehurst (North Carolina). There are 10 sectional qualifiers nationwide with only a handful of available spots at each site - the number of qualifying spots is determined by the quality and quantity of the field at each location.

The Purdue trio will first compete in the NCAA Central Regional on May 15-17 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois. The top five teams from NCAA Regionals will advance to the NCAA National Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas, on May 23-28.
