WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue track and field team completed the first day of action at the Armory Invitational in New York.
All-American Serene Ross and Keith McBride earned points for the Boilermakers in the weight throw competitions. Ross placed fifth with a mark of 60-2.50 and McBride finished sixth with a mark of 53-5.00. The women's distance medley relay team's sixth-place finish with a time of 12:10.18 also earned points for the Boilermakers.
Scott Hecht finished seventh in the men's weight throw with a mark of 50-1.00, while John Paul Smolenski was ninth with a mark of 56-9.75. In the 3,000m run, Geoff Fleming finished eighth with a time of 8:27.70. On the women's side, Ann Stechshulte finished 10th in 9:57.44.
Jacques Reeves completed the men's 200m dash preliminaries with a season best time of 21.42, the third seeded time for tomorrow's finals. Rookie Kenneth Baxter also advanced to the finals with a time of 21.71.
Sophomores Shanna Carter and T'Nita Waters ran respective lifetime personal records with times of 25.48 and 25.83 in the women's 200m dash.
Saturday's action will begin at 9 a.m. with the women's pole vault and conclude at 5 p.m. with an awards ceremony.
