WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue men's tennis team (6-1) secured its first victory over a ranked opponent since 2017 as the Boilermakers upset No. 32 Boise State Broncos, 4-1.
The victory not only extended Purdue's undefeated home streak (6-0) this season and handed Boise State its second loss of the season (6-2 overall record), but also marked the program's most dominant victory over a top-32 team in 11 years (last: W, 6-1 vs. No. 16 Penn State, 4/11/14).
Juan David Velasquez sealed the victory at the No. 2 singles position after coming from behind in Set 1 to win a Set 1 tiebreak, 7-6 (2), 6-4. With the win, Velasquez improves to a 5-2 singles record this spring and 9-4 during the 2024-25 season.
Stefan Simeunovic secured a win at the No. 4 singles position in a Set 2 tiebreak, downing the Broncos' Lukas Velik 6-2, 7-6 (0).
Henrick Villanger came out strong at No. 3 singles and was the first to finish, defeating Julius Seifert 6-4, 6-1. Villanger's win marked the sixth of the year (6-1 record) and the eighth overall in 2024-25 (8-4).
The Boilermakers will look to ride their momentum into Sunday's match vs. Illinois State. The showdown is set for a 3 p.m. ET start at Schwartz Tennis Center. Fans will be receiving a free stress ball in addition to free admission all season long.
