COLUMBUS, Ohio – Avery Worobel, Daryn Wright and Jenna Sonnenberg teamed up to give the Boilermakers three of the top-eight finishers on the podium in 1-meter diving, highlighting the first full day of action at the Big Ten Championships for Purdue Women's Swimming & Diving.
Kate Mouser and Adele Sands both moved up the program's all-time leaderboard in the 500 freestyle while scoring in the C final. Mouser (4:43.71, 7th all-time) posted the Boilermakers' fastest time in the event since Kaersten Meitz set the program record in 2018. Sands (4:45.01, 8th) posted the best time by a Purdue freshman since 2015. They both accounted for NCAA provisional qualifying times (B Cuts).
The Boilermakers were the only team to have three divers qualify for the 1-meter championship final. Worobel finished six tenths of a point shy of a medal in her first career individual event at Big Tens, taking fourth place among an initial field of 64 divers. Wright placed fifth to improve to 7-for-7 in career top-10 finishes at Big Tens. Sonnenberg placed eighth in her second career championship final at Big Tens.
Sophie McAfee and Kaitlin Simons also scored with top-24 finishes in the 1-meter diving prelim to give the Boilermakers five scorers, racking up 81 points in the event. Worobel also shined in the prelim as the only diver to post a 300-point list while finishing as the top qualifier by 15 points.
Hannah Hill scored in the C final of the 50 free after posting a time of 22.41 (B Cut) in the prelims, besting the program record (22.49) in the event entering the season yet again.
McAfee and Sonnenberg officially became four-year scorer at Big Tens with their performances on 1-meter. Wright qualified for her fourth career championship final at Big Tens and her fifth-place showing represented a personal best in a springboard event at the conference championships.
Along with Mouser and Sands in the 500 free, Reagan Mattice (4:48.74 in 500 free), Campbell Scofield (4:53.83 in 500 free), Madeline Greaves (2:02.36 in 200 IM) and Maddie Phillips (55.37 in 100 fly) also posted lifetime bests Thursday.
Action at the Big Ten Championships continues Friday with swimming prelims at 10 a.m., 3-meter diving prelims at noon and the finals session at 5 p.m.
