Purdue pieced together its best round of the season, shooting a 14-under par 274 to sit in second place at the competitive Puerto Rico Classic.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue men's golf team pieced together its best round of the season, shooting a 14-under par 274 to sit in second place at the competitive Puerto Rico Classic at the Grand Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.

All five Boilermakers shot even-par or better for a 274 for second place after 18 holes, sitting just two shots behind No. 1 Ole Miss after Monday's round. Purdue is in second place, one shot ahead of No. 4 Oklahoma (-13) and three shots ahead of No. 18 South Carolina (-11). No. 8 Virginia is in fifth pace at 8-under par 280.

Purdue avoided the big numbers in round one, posting 22 birdies (2nd in the field) with no double bogeys and just eight bogeys among the counting five. Purdue also led the field in par-4 scoring (-7), was third in par-3 scoring (-1) and fourth in par-5 scoring (-6).

The 274 is tied for the 15th-lowest round in Purdue history.

Leading the charge was senior Kent Hsiao with a bogey-free round of 6-under par 66, good for second place and one shot out of the lead set by North Florida's Brett Schell (-7). Hsiao posted nine-hole scores of 33 on both sides, leading the field in par-4 scoring (-5).

Sophomore Sam Easterbrook is tied for fifth, posting a 5-under par 67 that featured a round-best seven birdies, nine pars and two bogeys.

Jenson Forrester overcame a slow start to rally to sit in 21st place at 2-under par 70. He was 2-over par through five holes, but played in his last 13 holes in 4-under par for his round of 70.

Freshman Supapon Amornchaichan is tied for 29th after a 1-under par 71 that featured 15 pars, and senior Nels Surtani is tied for 44th after an even-par 72.

Playing as an individual, Kentaro Nanayama is tied for 13th at 3-under par.

Purdue will tee off round two on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. ET, paired with Ole Miss and Oklahoma for the second straight day.
