Purohit Named Big Ten Player of the Week

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - After an undefeated weekend in singles and doubles action Soham Purohit has been named the Co-Big Ten Player of the Week. He is the first Boilermaker to receive the honor since Gergely Madarasz on March 21, 2017.

Purohit was a shining star on a Purdue team that rolled over a pair of non-conference opponents. The Boilers defeated DePaul 5-2 and Cleveland State 5-2 to sweep the weekend. His heavy lifting contributed to four of Purdue's 10 total points across both duals.

Despite this being his first collegiate season, Purohit is still undefeated in the top four positions (2-0 at No. 2, 1-0 at No. 3, 2-0 at No. 4) after picking up his first two career wins at No. 2 this past weekend. He has won four in a row, and five of his last six in singles play.

Purohit dominated from start to finish in both duals, surrendering no more than four games in any set. He came up big on Saturday by clinching the win for Purdue with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Cleveland State's Mikael Erler. He contributed the fifth and final point in Friday's dual as he defeated DePaul's Matteo Iaquinto 6-3, 6-4.

On top of his success as a solo act, Purohit is starting to build an impressive doubles record with partner Juan David Velasquez. The duo went unbeaten at doubles No. 1 as Purdue won consecutive doubles points for the second time this season (3 consecutive points in January).

The pair kept the point alive against DePaul with a 6-4 victory over Jona Gitschel/Shourya Verma and achieved the same feat against the Vikings with a 6-3 win over Nico Jamison/Kade Mindry.

Purdue is currently riding a three-match win streak while improving its home record to 4-3. The Boilers next test comes on the road against UNLV this Tuesday, March 12.
