NEW YORK – Purdue track & field alumna Devynne Charlton broke the world record in the 60-meter hurdles on Sunday, February 11, 2024, at the Millrose Games in New York.
Charlton ran the 60m hurdles in 7.67 seconds, a world-record time by 0.01 seconds. She topped the previous record of 7.68 seconds, which was set by Sweden's Susanna Kallur 16 years earlier almost to the day, on February 10, 2008.
A Boilermaker from 2014-18, Charlton owns four Purdue records. She set the school marks in the 60m (7.26) and 60m hurdles (7.93) indoors in 2017 and in the 100m (11.22) and 100m hurdles (12.70) outdoors in 2018. She also is in the top-10 in the indoor and outdoor 200m and is part of seven of the 10 fastest outdoor 4x100 relay teams, including three of the top four. Charlton helped Purdue set a mark of 43.97 that broke the record at the time in 2015.
Charlton is a nine-time All-American and the NCAA runner-up in the 60m hurdles in 2017 and the 100m hurdles in 2018. A native of The Bahamas, she is an 11-time Big Ten champion and was named the Big Ten Track Athlete of the Year three times.
Charlton is believed to be the second Boilermaker in team history to ever hold a world record in track & field and the first in nearly 120 years. At the 1904 Olympics, Ray Ewry broke the world record in the standing long jump. A Lafayette, Indiana, Ewry posted a mark of 3.47 meters en route to winning one of his eight career Olympic gold medals.
