Sekne Named to Ben Hogan Award Watch List

Purdue senior golfer Herman Sekne was one of 40 collegiate golfers named to the Ben Hogan Award watch list.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue senior Herman Sekne was one of 40 collegiate golfers named to the Ben Hogan Award watch list, given annually to the nation's top golfer.

Sekne is one of four Big Ten golfers on the list, joining Illinois' Max Herendeen and Ohio State's Maxwell Moldovan and Neal Shipley.

Sekne, who became Purdue's first All-American since 2002 a year ago when he was named to the third team, is one of the most-decorated golfers in school history. He has won eight Big Ten Golfer of the Week honors, one off the league record and has his name written all over the Purdue record book.

Sekne enters this weekend's Puerto Rico Classic with a 69.21 stroke average, three top-5 finishes in five events and a win at the Windon Memorial Classic. In his 252 holes played in the fall, he recorded just one double-bogey.

Ten of his 14 rounds so far this year have been even- or under-par, including eight rounds in the 60s. Three of his rounds this year have been 65 or better (seven for career) and his 54-hole score of 197 at the Windon Memorial Classic is a school record.

His career average of 71.30 is a stroke-and-a-half better than second on the career list (Austin Eoff - 72.82). He owns 33 career rounds in the 60s, the most for a Purdue golfer in school history and eight more than second place (Austin Eoff - 25).

Sekne ranks 12th in the latest PGA Tour U. rankings and is 14th in the most-recent World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR).

The Boilermakers open their spring season Sunday at the Puerto Rico Classic.
