SAUCIER, Miss. The Purdue men's golf team started fast, but struggled down the stretch in the opening round of the Fallen Oak Invitational at Fallen Oak Golf Club in Saucier, Mississippi.
 
The Boilermakers shot a 7-over par 295 to finish round one in sixth place, eight shots behind first-round leader Georgia (-1). Mississippi State, LSU and Ole Miss, all teams ranked in the nation's top 15, are tied for second at 1-over par 289, while South Carolina is fifth at 5-over par 293.
 
Illinois, Iowa and Kansas are tied for seventh at 10-over par 298.
 
The Boilermakers were near the top of the leaderboard until their final three holes. The Boilermakers' counting team played holes 8 and 9, Purdue's final two holes after starting on the back nine, in a combined 5-over par.
 
Sam Easterbrook led Purdue in round one with an even-par 72 for T-13th after 18 holes. Easterbrook recorded four straight birdies early in his round, but played his last six holes in 3-over par to fall back to even-par for his round.
 
Supapon Amornchaichan and Nels Surtani are tied for 29th after opening rounds of 2-over par 74. Kent Hsiao is tied for 39th with a 3-over par 75 and Jenson Forrester is tied for 49th following a 4-over par 76.
 
Playing as an individual, Kentaro Nanayama is tied for 29th with a 2-over par 74.
 
Purdue will tee off round two at 11:20 a.m. ET on Sunday, paired with Ole Miss and South Carolina.
