The Boilermakers are 1-1-0 on the season after an 8-0 win over Iona on Sunday afternoon. Valparaiso is unbeaten at 2-0-0 and coming off a 1-0 victory against Northern Illinois to cap its opening-weekend homestand.

Sophomore forward Kayla Budish leads the team with five points and a team-high-tying two goals through the first two games. Redshirt junior midfielder Victoria Kevdzija and junior forward Gracie Dunaway also have scored twice in 2023 and are second on the team with four points. Dunaway paces the squad with seven shots and four shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Charlotte Cyr has made six saves for a .857 save percentage and a 0.56 goals-against average.

SCOUTING VALPARAISO
Valparaiso is 2-0-0 on the season after a pair of home wins on opening weekend. The Beacons began the campaign with a 2-1 win over Eastern Illinois and followed it up with a 1-0 shutout of Northern Illinois. Three different players have scored goals, including Allie Anderson, who also has a pair of assists for a team-best four points in addition to eight shots. Nikki Coryell has allowed one goal in 180 minutes with six saves for a .857 save percentage.

The Beacons are coming off their first Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title in team history in 2022, and the squad was picked second in this year's preseason coaches poll. Four players were named to the All-Valley preseason team, including Coryell.

SERIES HISTORY VS. THE BEACONS
Purdue owns a 4-0-0 mark all-time against Valparaiso, with a 3-0-0 record in West Lafayette. Thursday is the first regular-season meeting between the two in-state foes since 2009, a 1-0 Boilermaker win at home. The series began with a 3-0 win in 1998, followed by a 7-1 road victory in 2000. Purdue then earned a 3-0 home shutout in 2007 before the 2009 triumph.

LAST TIME OUT: HISTORIC WIN
Purdue tied the program record for goals in a game and goals in a half in an 8-0 victory over Iona on August 20.

Purdue's eight goals are tied for the most in team history, a feat that has been accomplished just twice before, in 2003 and 2011. The eight-goal margin of victory also ties the program record. Additionally, the Boilermakers scored a record-tying six goals in the first half. The Old Gold and Black had nine assists in the contest, which is tied for No. 2 in team history behind the record of 10. Sunday's eight goals also are the most in coach Drew Roff's nine seasons, topping the previous high of six.

Budish, Dunaway and Kevdzija all scored twice. It was Dunaway's second career brace and Budish and Kevdzija's first multi-goal games. Kevdzija's first goal, in the waning minutes of the first half, was the first score of her career. Junior forward Megan Hutchinson also netted her first goal, which was the first points of her career, and senior midfielder Nicole Kevdzija joined the goal-scoring frenzy.

Nicole and Victoria Kevdzija are the first pair of sisters to both score a goal in the same game in the 26-year history of the Purdue soccer program.

OPENING WEEKEND SUCCESS
With the split weekend to begin the year, the Boilermakers are 9-5-2 in opening-weekend games in head coach Drew Roff's nine-year tenure. The loss to No. 24 UCF on August 17 was just Purdue's second season-opening defeat under Roff, as his side now is 6-2-1 in such games and 7-1-1 in home-openers.

RECORD-BREAKING CROWDS
The largest crowd in Purdue soccer history was on hand for the Boiler Gold Rush season-kickoff game on August 17. It marked the third year in a row that the single-game attendance record was broken at Folk Field. The 2023 record topped last year's mark of 3,296, which bested 2021's then-record of 2,125 fans that encircled Purdue's home pitch. Prior to 2021, the team attendance record was 1,712, set in 2016, a number that now ranks No. 4 all-time.

UP NEXT: HOMESTAND CONCLUDES
