Final Brackets Opens in a new window
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Purdue Wrestling finished in ninth place at the 2023 Big Ten Wrestling Championships with 47 team points after earning four individual placements that all came with automatic qualification to the 2023 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Tulsa, Okla.

Sophomore Matt Ramos led the charge for the Boilermakers with a third-place finish at 125 pounds. Graduate-senior Parker Filius took fifth in dramatic fashion, senior Kendall Coleman finished in sixth and freshman Hayden Copass earned seventh on a hectic day in the Crisler Center.

"I thought the guys competed really hard this weekend and we always want to see that," said head coach Tony Ersland. "Our young guys took steps forward and I saw a lot of growth out of them, not only in their performance but their consistency. I feel better about this young group because of how they competed. I'm not going to call it a super high note, but our guys showed up, they battled and many of them did their best wrestling this weekend even if they didn't wind up on the podium. We didn't get everything we wanted out of this weekend and we will be going into the NCAA tournament with a chip on our shoulder because of it."

The No. 3 seeded Ramos defended his seed on Sunday, booking his spot in the third-place match with a tight 2-1 decision over Minnesota's Patrick McKee. The Lockport, Ill., native once again demonstrated his superior scrambling ability to finish off a wild takedown in the first period which proved to be enough to secure the win. There was no actual third-place match as Northwestern's Michael DeAugustino took a medical forfeit.

In his final Big Ten tournament, Filius made sure to go out with a bang. He lost his first bout of the day to No. 2 Beau Bartlett of Penn State to put him in the fifth-place match. In that fight for fifth, he faced No. 4 Frankie Tal-Shahar of Northwestern whom he had wrestled twice before without getting a win. Down by one late in the third, the veteran 141-pounder secured a takedown with only one second remaining to win the match 4-3  and complete the upset. Ever the fighter, the Havre, Mont., native came from behind in three of his four wins on the weekend.

"This is the time of year where you're looking for consistency," Ersland said. "We've always known that Parker is capable of high-end wrestling, but you have to be able to put it together multiple days in a row to wind up on the podium and he did that this weekend against really high quality opponents. That positive momentum will set him up nicely going into NCAAs."

Coleman rode a strong first day to a sixth place finish. He lost both of his matches on Sunday, falling in close decisions to Northwestern's Trevor Chubley and Michigan State's Chase Saldate. He will look to bounce back well in Tulsa in two weeks.

With their podium finishes, Filius and Coleman became the 15th and 16th wrestlers in Purdue history to place four times at the Big Ten Championships.

The freshman Copass wrestled well on Saturday to earn a spot in the seventh place match on Sunday. He would not have to wrestle for the place, as Boone McDermott of Rutgers withdrew due to injury and ceded the match to the Boilermaker.

The four qualifiers will travel to Tulsa, Okla., for the 2023 NCAA Wrestling Championships from March 16-18 in the BOK Center.
