LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Matt Ramos will wrestle on into the second day at the 2023 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, the lone representative for the Boilermakers after the conclusion of Friday's matches.
Purdue had four wrestlers still alive going into the second session. The first to take the mat was the redshirt-junior Ramos who split his pair of matches on the evening. After losing an 8-1 decision to No. 20 Nico Provo of Stanford, the Lockport, Ill., native bounced back quickly with an 8-5 win over Harvard's No. 25 Diego Sotelo to guarantee that he will be Purdue's seventh three-time CKLV placewinner. He wrestles Nebraska's No. 9 Caleb Smith for a spot in the consolation semis tomorrow morning.
Redshirt-sophomore No. 30 Stoney Buell also split his matches in session two, starting off with a dominant 12-1 major decision upset of No. 10 Antrell Taylor from Nebraska. Buell came into the match with only one career ranked win to his name and doubled that tally in emphatic fashion. A takedown 23 seconds into the bout set the tone and he never looked back, finishing off a seven-point move in the third to push the score into major decision territory. It is already the third top-10 win for the Boilermakers this season.
The win set him up to face Oregon State's No. 8 Matt Olguin in the next round. Buell once again opened the scoring, snaring an early takedown to lead 3-1 at the end of the first period. However, Olguin took control in the second and finished with an 11-4 decision to bring Buell's tournament run to an end.
Two more Boilermakers wrestled their way into the second session, but dropped their matches against higher ranked opponents. Dustin Norris held a lead against No. 15 Nic Bouzakis of Ohio State before surrendering an 18-5 major and James Rowley battled in a rematch with N.C. State's No. 20 Dylan Fishback but came up short 4-0.
Session three in the Westgate Paradise Event Center gets underway at 1:00 p.m. ET tomorrow. If he were to win his next two matches, Ramos would wrestle for third place during session four at 6:00 p.m. ET. The fifth and seventh place matches will take place during session three.
