BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Freshman Bryanna Craig won a silver medal in the heptathlon as the Purdue track & field team competed on the second day of the 2023 Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Bloomington, Indiana, on Saturday, May 13.
On a hot and muggy day at Indiana's Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex, Craig earned her second Big Ten medal of her young career, while two Boilermakers advanced to Sunday's finals in their respective events. That included junior Cierra Williams in the 400-meter with the third-fastest time in program history.
Craig and Williams notched three of Purdue's 11 personal-best marks on Saturday.
In her third collegiate heptathlon competition, Craig scored a collegiate-best 5,460 points to win the silver medal. She entered the day in sixth place after four events, but quickly moved up to fourth after a long jump mark of 5.64 meters to begin the day. A fourth-place javelin throw of 33.95m pushed Craig into third place overall heading into the final event of the competition. That was the 800m, where Craig was second with a personal-record time of 2:12.34 to move her up one final spot into second.
The silver medal in the heptathlon goes with the silver Craig won in the pentathlon less than three months ago at the indoor conference championships.
One of the first running events for the Boilermakers was the 400m, where Williams ran the second-fastest prelim time of 52.34. A PR by 0.28 seconds, Williams moved up one spot to No. 3 in Purdue history with the fastest time since 2018. The time also is tied for 17th in the NCAA East region this year.
Williams advanced to tomorrow's final, and she will be joined by fifth-year Justin Becker, who ran the 100m in 10.39 to take the ninth and final qualifying spot on Saturday. It's a personal-best time in all conditions for Becker, who also earned a spot in the 200m final on Friday.
The day began with the decathlon, where junior Logan Sandlin concluded competition with the final five events. He added three more personal-record marks to achieve a collegiate-best total of 6,583 points to place 10th overall. In just his second career decathlon, Sandlin's second day was highlighted by PRs of 15.71 in the 110m hurdles, 32.73m in the discus and 4:44.91 in the 1,500m.
