WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to Vanderbilt on Sunday afternoon at Folk Field.

On a cloudy but warm day in West Lafayette, a 78th-minute goal was the lone score to conclude the opening weekend of the season for both teams. The Boilermakers (1-1-0) were out-shot 15-9, and the Commodores (2-0-0) had seven shots on goal to Purdue's four. Sophomore goalkeeper Sara Kile made six saves for the second consecutive game and Vanderbilt's keeper stopped all four shots she faced, including one penalty kick.

Purdue's nine shots came from eight different players, as senior defender Chloe Woodbeck paced the way with two. Four players had one shot on goal.

The Boilermakers had two good chances early, as Woodbeck and sophomore forward Gracie Dunaway each had shots that went wide in the eighth and ninth minutes, respectively. In the 19th minute, the Purdue defense had a pair of blocked shots inside the 18-yard box to keep the game goalless.

Following four Vanderbilt shots, one which was saved by Kile, freshman forward Naomi Splittorff had a chance saved and sophomore midfielder Victoria Kevdzija sent a shot wide, both from outside the box.

Freshman forward Brooke Haarala had a great opportunity with just over one minute left in the opening half, but Vandy's keeper deflected it out for the save.

The Commodores held a 7-5 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes, though the Boilermakers had a 2-1 edge in shots on goal.

Freshman forward Kayla Budish registered a shot saved minutes into the second half, and Kile followed it up with two great saves in the 51st minute. From the edge of the six, VU's first shot was poked away by Kile, and she scooped up the attempt on the rebound after it bounced off a Boilermaker defender.

Kile made another nice save in the 71st minute, and her fourth save of the half was in the 76th.

Vanderbilt scored the game's only goal two minutes later. Rachel Deresky found the back of the net on a shot from near the penalty spot. The goal at 77:11 came off a centering pass by Reagan Kelley from the right side of the 18.

Purdue had a chance for the equalizer in the 84th minute when Budish drew a penalty inside the box. However, Vandy's keeper made the save on junior midfielder Emily Mathew's penalty kick to preserve the shutout.

In the second half, the Commodores had eight shots, six on goal, and the Boilermakers had four shots, two on target.

Up next, Purdue takes to the road for the first time in the regular season on Thursday, August 25 at Kentucky. The Boilermakers and Wildcats square off for the second consecutive season, this time in Lexington, with kickoff set for 5 p.m. ET. Following the midweek matchup, Purdue returns home to host Miami (Ohio) on Sunday, August 28, at 1 p.m. ET. Admission is free for all fans to every regular-season home game at Folk Field in 2022.
