WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue alum and PGA Tour professional Adam Schenk punched his ticket to the 122nd U.S. Open at the Final Qualifier at Kinsale Golf and Field Club and Wedgewood Golf and Country Club in Columbus, Ohio, on Monday.
Schenk shot an 8-under par 135 to place tied for fifth out of 106 players and earn his invitation to America's National Championship. He recorded rounds of 69 and 66 to move into the qualifiers list after being on the outside looking in after 18 holes. With the result, he will play in his first U.S. Open which will be contested at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.
The Columbus, Ohio, site was loaded with PGA Tour professionals who played The Memorial Tournament over the weekend. Schenk is joined by tour pros Lanto Griffin, Denny McCarthy, Joel Dahmen, Patrick Rodgers and Wyndham Clark as players who survived "Golf's Longest Day".
Schenk will now play in his second straight major after finishing tied for 41st at last month's PGA Championship in Tulsa, Oklahoma – in what was his first major appearance.
Schenk, a 2014 Purdue grad and all-Big Ten player who is littered among the record book at Purdue, has experience playing The Country Club, finishing tied for 38th in stroke play and moving on to match play in the 2013 U.S. Amateur. Schenk shot a 74 in the first round at the 2013 U.S. Amateur at The Country Club, before shooting a 69 at its companion course, Charles River Country Club.
This will mark the third straight year that a Purdue alum has played in the U.S. Open after Tyler Duncan ('12) played in the 2020 event at Winged Foot, placing tied for 34th. Fernando Barco ('17) competed in last year's championship at Torrey Pines. Duncan also competed in the 2018 event (T-56th at Shinnecock Hills) and 2015 championship (MC at Chambers Bay).
Schenk, a native of Vincennes, Indiana, is having an outstanding season on the PGA Tour, currently ranking 80th in the FedExCup standings and 83rd on the money list ($1,092,238). He has four top-20 finishes and is coming off a 26th-place showing at The Memorial Tournament over the weekend. He has qualified for the FedExCup Playoffs in each of the last three seasons and is a virtual lock to make it this season as well.
