GENEVA, Ohio - The Purdue wrestling team wrapped up competition at the U23 U.S. Freestyle World Team Trials on Sunday at SPIRE Academy as its three remaining competitors fell short of the podium. Freshman Dustin Norris was the lone Boilermaker to advance on Sunday, winning his first two matches before bowing out of the tournament.
Norris took a forfeit to start his day at 61 kg, and then found himself in a barn burner in his first match. After trading a pair of two-point scores with Boone RTC's Sean Carter, to sit tied 4-4 in the second period, Carter got in deep on a double and followed a four-point move with a turn to take a 10-4 advantage. Purdue challenged the call and lost, pushing Carter's lead to 11-4 with a minute remaining in the match. Norris quickly scored a push out point to cut the lead to 11-5, and then rallied with a five-point throw and a turn to take a 12-11 advantage and victory.
In his second bout, Norris was unable to get going and fell by technical superiority to Julian Farber of the Panther Wrestling Club RTC. Farber scored the first takedown, Norris countered with a step-out point, but then it was all Farber with a series of takedowns and turns to finish a 12-1 win.
Fellow freshmen Hayden Filipovich and Tristan Ruhlman saw their day-two action cut short as Filipovich suffered a 7-0 defeat at 92 kg, while Ruhlman was pinned in the first period of his final match at 125 kg.
