Session I Recap
LINCOLN, Neb. - Four members of the Purdue wrestling team secured automatic bids to the 2022 NCAA Championships on Saturday, leading the Boilermakers' efforts at the Big Ten Championships. Three Boilermakers are still chasing conference bronze, while two others have locked up a spot on the podium as Purdue has 34.5 team points and is in 10th place.
Senior Devin Schroder, juniors Kendall Coleman and Thomas Penola and freshman Matt Ramos have all locked up trips to Detroit for nationals, finishing inside the allocated bids at their respective weight classes. Seniors Parker Filius and Michael Woulfe remain alive for automatic bids at 141 and 285 respectively.
Schroder's bid for a third straight trip to a conference championship match at 125 pounds fell short as he was pinned in the semifinals by top-seeded and top-ranked Nick Suriano of Michigan. Schroder moves to the consolation bracket where he'll meet No. 8 seed Patrick McKee of Minnesota tomorrow, with the winner advancing to the third-place match.
Coleman rebounded from his quarterfinal loss with a pair of wins in the evening session, scoring a 10-3 win over Indiana's Derek Gilcher and a 7-5 decision over Wisconsin's Garrett Model. Coleman's 16 takedowns on the day pushed his season total to 71 and eclipsed the 200-takedown mark for his career (213). He'll meet Penn State's Brady Berge in tomorrow morning's session, with the winner advancing to the third-place match.
Penola will also have a shot at the third-place match tomorrow, matching up with No. 5 seed Patrick Brucki of Michigan in the consolation semifinals. Penola posted a pair of narrow victories to finish Saturday, edging Minnesota's Michial Foy, 3-2, and backing that up with a 4-3 decision over Greg Bulsak of Rutgers.
With a 5-3 victory in the consolation quarterfinals, Ramos locked up a spot on the podium and his first career trip to nationals. He snared a pair of takedowns in the win, his 17th of the season, advancing to face No. 5 seed Rayvon Foley of Michigan State. Ramos took him to the brink, forcing sudden victory with a third-period takedown, but gave one up in overtime to fall to the seventh-place bout. He'll meet No. 12 seed Jake Gliva of Minnesota in his final match of the tournament.
Filius opened the second session with an incredible come-from-behind victory over fourth-seeded Chad Red of Nebraska. Red scored a pair of first-period takedowns and built a 5-1 lead going to the third period, but Filius rallied with a takedown to pull within one and then took Red to his back as time expired. Initially called a pin, the call was overturned and sent to sudden victory. Another scramble ensued in the extra period and Filius caught a cradle, putting Red on his back a second time for four points and the win. Filius will face Northwestern's Frankie Tal Shahar tomorrow in the seventh-place match with an automatic bid to nationals on the line.
Woulfe also still has a shot at an automatic bid to nationals as he'll wrestle in a ninth-place tournament with four other heavyweights with the winner earning the spot. He'll face Indiana's Jacob Bullock in his first match tomorrow.
Tomorrow's first session begins at 11 a.m. CT with the consolation semifinals and seventh-place matches. The Big Ten Network will continue its live coverage and will offer full coverage of each mat on B1G+.
