WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue baseball's season-opening stretch of three consecutive neutral-site series continues with another four-game set, squaring off against a Princeton team that is set to take the field for the first time since the shutdown in March 2020.
The Boilermakers are slated to play at Ting Stadium in Holly Springs, North Carolina, each of the next two weekends. Located about 20 miles southwest of Raleigh, Ting Stadium is home of the Holly Springs Salamanders of the Coastal Plain League, which is one of the premier wood bat summer leagues in the southeast. Purdue will be the home team against both Princeton and Longwood (March 4-6). There's also a March 2 midweek date at Charlotte on the 10-day road trip to North Carolina.
The Boilermakers are off their first 4-0 start since 2018. The 1991 and 2018 teams both opened their seasons 5-0.
Led by longtime head coach Scott Bradley, whose son Scotty played at Indiana from 2016 to 2019, Princeton is opening its season with Friday's 1 p.m. ET doubleheader. The Tigers' last game was March 8, 2020 at Ole Miss. The Ivy League opted to cancel its spring sports season while opting out of competing in intercollegiate athletics during the 2020-21 school year. Princeton also opened its 2020 campaign with a four-game series in North Carolina vs. a Big Ten opponent, Penn State.
THE LAST TIME…
• Purdue played an Ivy League opponent: Lost to Columbia & Princeton (Boca Raton) on 1999 Spring Break Trip
• Purdue played in North Carolina: Won Campbell Invitational (Buies Creek) in February 2020
• Purdue played consecutive weekend series in the same state besides Indiana: California on 2017 Spring Break Trip
• Purdue played consecutive four-game weekends to begin a season: 2013
Paul Toetz enjoyed a memorable Purdue debut weekend in Texas. He connected for a home run in each of the first two games, reached base safely in nine of his 17 plate appearances and led the team with 11 defensive assists while starting games at both shortstop and second base. Since 2001, he joined Jacson McGowan (2018) as the only Boilermakers to homer in each of the first two games of the season. He also became the sixth newcomer in that span to account for Purdue's first home run of the season – all since 2010.
NEWCOMERS TO HIT PURDUE'S FIRST HOME RUN OF A SEASON (SINCE 2001)
• Cameron Perkins – 2010 (Game 1)
• Conner Hudnall – 2013 (Game 1)
• Justin Gubser – 2015 (Game 2)
• Mike Madej – 2017 (Game 2)
• Ben Nisle – 2018 (Game 1)
• Paul Toetz – 2022 (Game 1)
Toetz was a big reason why the Boilermakers went deep in each of the first four games of a season for the first time (data since 2001). Cam Thompson hit a three-run homer in game 3 of the South Dakota Series en route to a nine-RBI weekend. Thompson has 23 RBI in 32 career games as a Boilermaker. Thanks in part to a grand slam and now a pair of three-run homers, 22 of his 23 RBI have come as part of multi-RBI games. Coincidentally, his lone single-RBI game happened as part of his first collegiate hit and RBI (on the same play) in Purdue's March 20 win at Indiana last season.
OPENING WEEKEND PITCHING BREAKDOWN & DEFENSIVE NOTABLES
• Starters: 10 2/3 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 9 BB, 14 K, 4.22 ERA, 7.59 H/9
• Relievers: 25 1/3 IP, 16 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 13 BB, 30 K, 2.84 ERA, 5.68 H/9
• Total: 36 IP, 25 H, 15 R, 13 ER, 22 BB, 44 K, 3.25 ERA, 6.25 H/9
• Purdue recorded 10-plus strikeouts in the first three games of a season for the first time (data since 2001). It marked the first time the Boilermakers accomplished the feat at any point since doing so in four straight in April 2019.
• Purdue also did a fine job of playing clean baseball vs. South Dakota State. In their 36 innings in the field, Purdue committed only four errors (all in Sunday's win) to go along with limited unforced errors – one wild pitch, one passed ball, one balk and two hit batters. They did it despite having limited practice time outdoors prior to arriving in Texas on Wednesday afternoon of last week.
• Going off data going back to 2001, it marked the first time Purdue was not charged with an error in each of its first three games of a season.
