CLEVELAND, Ohio - Freshman Jacob Macatangay finished in second place in the 2022 Cleveland State Open to highlight the non-varsity trip for seven Purdue wrestlers on Sunday.
Macatangay, who took first at the Clarion Open in his collegiate debut earlier this season, went 3-1 on the day to improve to 7-1 in his career and add another medal to his cabinet with a second place finish in the 133 pound division. He would bookend his day with matches against wrestlers from Cleveland State. He picked up his team-high third win via fall (1:56) in the opening round against Cody Moosman before losing a 6-4 decision to Jake Manley in the final.
Six other Boilermakers competed on the day. Junior Mitch Hutmacher competed at 184 and matched Macatangay with three wins in the tournament, going 3-2 with back to back major decision wins over Michigan's Matthew McKenna (12-4) and Buffalo's Fabio Preka (14-3). Sophomore Jaden Reynolds and junior Christian Navida made their way through the 149 pound bracket before meeting each other in the consolation round of eight. Reynolds came away with a 3-2 decision in a close one against his teammate. Results Cleveland State Open
