DETROIT, Mich. - The Purdue wrestling team wrapped up its competition at the 2022 NCAA Championships, hosted at Little Caesars Arena on Friday. Freshman Matt Ramos and senior Max Lyon had their Cinderella runs fall short of the podium, suffering losses in the Round of 12 to conclude the Boilermakers' efforts at the national tournament with 10.5 points.
As the No. 26 seed at 133 pounds, Ramos bested the No. 7, 8 and 15 seeds on his way to the blood round, but came up shy of the placing rounds with a loss to No. 4 seed Korbin Myers of Virginia Tech. Myers got on top early with a takedown and four-point turn, and Ramos was unable to recover. Lyon had a similar performance at 184 pounds, upending the No. 13 and 14 seeds as the No. 30 seed and battling his way to the top-12. His four-match win streak ended at the hands of No. 7 seed Kaleb Romero, as the Buckeye got on the offense early and ran away with the bout.
Ramos finishes his rookie season at 21-10, posting a 3-2 tournament record, while Lyon pushed his record to 16-15 for his final season and finished his career with 87 career wins. Lyon ranks 18th in program history with 237 takedowns, scoring 10 in the national tournament.
With two sessions left in the tournament, Purdue is tied for 30th place with 10.5 points.
