WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Members of the Purdue women's golf team that saw their 2021 season come to an abrupt end last week got some great news Monday. After the Baton Rouge Regional was canceled without a single shot being made, Barstool Sports' Let Them Play Classic (LTP Classic) was rapidly approved by the NCAA. The 54-hole event will be played Thursday, May 20 (36 holes), and Friday, May 21 (18 holes), at Whirlwind Golf Club's The Cattail and Devil's Claw courses in Chandler, Arizona.
"We are looking forward to competing in this unique event," head women's golf coach Devon Brouse said. "Our players want to close out a strange year by playing well in Arizona and I look forward to watching them compete."
The teams slated for the Barstool tournament include the 12 schools that were invited to the NCAA Regional at LSU's University Club, but saw three straight days of inclement weather conditions wash out all 54 holes. The schools that will play in the new event are Oregon State, Houston, Miami, North Texas, Purdue, Mississippi State, Tulsa, Sam Houston State, Kennesaw State, East Tennessee State, Jacksonville State and Quinnipiac.
The waiver from the NCAA provides an exception in the competition rules, allowing participants impacted by the cancellation of the Baton Rouge Regional to play in one season-ending event such as the LTP Classic in women's golf.
The teams can represent their respective institutions at the tournament and the coaching staff for each participating school will be permitted to attend and work with their team at the LTP Classic. Team and individual scoring will be allowed.
