Greensboro Aquatic Center / Greensboro, North Carolina
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Nine Boilermakers are set to represent Purdue men's swimming & diving in a program-record 12 events on the national stage of the NCAA Championships this week in North Carolina.
The national championship meet begins Wednesday with the 800 freestyle relay and continues through Saturday night at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, which also served as the host of the women's NCAA Championships last week. The individual events begin with Thursday's prelims. Swimming prelims begin daily at 10 a.m. ET. Diving prelims get underway during the noon hour. Finals sessions begin at 6 p.m.
All relays are finals-only events this year. Purdue qualified in a team-record four relays this season – the 200 and 400 free as well as the 200 and 400 medley. Both the 200 free and 400 medley relays are on the schedule for Thursday. Two years ago, the Boilermakers earned honorable mention All-America accolades in both the 200 and 400 medley relays. It marked the first time Purdue earned All-America honors in two different relays in the same season. This year's quartets broke team records in the 200 free, 400 free and 200 medley.
The Boilermakers' nine qualifiers – matching the program's most since 10 men went to NCAAs in 2015 – will also be competing in a combined eight individual events. The Boilermakers have multiple qualifiers in the 100 free, 200 breast, 3-meter diving and platform diving. Multiple Purdue divers have qualified for NCAAs each of the last eight years the meet has been held.
Purdue has finished among the top 25 in the team scoring at the NCAA Championships 12 times since 2005. The Boilermakers placed 13th in 2009, 2010 and 2017, winning multiple national titles in diving all three years.
ESPN3 and ESPN's streaming apps will provide live video coverage of all sessions. The men's NCAA Championships this season were originally scheduled to be held in Iowa City. Instead, the Greensboro Aquatic Center is hosting the men's national championship meet for the first time.
WHO'S COMPETING FOR THE BOILERMAKERS
• Purdue will be represented by Ben Bramley, Greg Duncan and Brandon Loschiavo in the diving events. Nikola Aćin, Trent Pellini and Nick Sherman are the individual qualifiers in the swimming events. They'll team with first-time qualifiers Michael Juengel, Ryan Hrosik and Ryan Lawrence in the relays.
• Loschiavo has joined elite company twice over the last month. Feb. 27, he became just the fourth Big Ten diver to be a three-time conference champion on the tower. Eight days later, he became only the third Purdue diver to be a four-time NCAAs qualifier. As the 10-meter champion at the 2019 USA Diving Senior National Championships, Loschiavo will once again be among the favorites on the tower Saturday. However, he'll be looking to finish on the podium at NCAAs for the first time since 2017.
• Bramley and Duncan both posted top-10 finishes at the 2019 NCAA Championships. Bramley placed sixth on platform. Duncan was ninth on 3-meter and 10th on 1-meter, winning the 3-meter consolation final.
• Pellini was a three-time honorable mention All-American as a sophomore in 2019. He was Purdue's first swimmer to accomplish the feat since 1992, the year a Boilermaker first claimed honorable mention All-American accolades. Pellini swam the breaststroke leg on both medley relays and also placed 15th individually in the 100 breast. Aćin also returns to NCAAs after being part of both All-American medley relays in 2019.
RECENT ALL-AMERICA HISTORY
• The Boilermakers have had at least one All-American (in any event) at the NCAA Championships every year this century the meet has been held. Ben Bramley, Greg Duncan, Trent Pellini and Nick Sherman were also named All-Americans by the CSCAA last season after the shutdown. Duncan, Pellini and Sherman had all qualified for NCAAs and Bramley was considered a likely championship finalist on the tower again.
• One men's diver has earned All-America honors in 14 of the last 15 national championship meets. Olympians David Boudia and Steele Johnson won a combined 11 NCAA titles for Purdue since 2009.
• Nikola Aćin, Pellini and Sherman would all aim to qualify among the top eight in the preliminaries of an individual event to have an opportunity to race for the national title while clinching full-fledged All-America honors. Purdue's championship finalists in a swimming event this century includes: Matthew Martin (1650 free in 2000, 2001), Louis Paul (200 IM in 2005), Giordan Pogioli (200 breast in 2006) and Marat Amaltdinov (200 breast in 2017).
Last week, divers Emily Bretscher, Maggie Merriman and Maycey Vieta competed at the women's NCAA Championships in Greensboro. All three finished among the top seven on platform, with Vieta winning bronze. They helped the Purdue women finish 20th in the team scoring.
