WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 17 Purdue wrestling team hosts its final dual of the 2021 season Monday, welcoming intrastate rival Indiana to Holloway Gymnasium for an 8 p.m. ET contest, live on the Big Ten Network. The Boilermakers enter the weekend at 3-5 on the season and have won the last 10 meetings with the 2-5 Hoosiers, including last season's 23-9 victory in Wilkinson Hall.
SENIOR DAY
The 10 young men that make up this year's senior class were members of head coach Tony Ersland's second and third recruiting classes at Purdue. They have played integral roles in the rising success and prominence of the program over the last few years, and have helped build our championship culture, which continues to grow today.
The group has combined for a pair of All-America awards, six NCAA Championship qualifications, Purdue's best Big Ten Championship finish in 30 years, five Big Ten placewinning performances, 245 victories and 533 takedowns. They have collected 12 Academic All-Big Ten awards and five Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honors, in addition to including a Purdue Student Athlete Advisory Council President-Elect and two members of our U.S. Armed Forced.
PURDUE LINEUP & RANKINGS
The Boilermakers held firm at No. 17 in the nation in this week's NWCA Coaches Poll, and maintained their marks between 18 and 28 in the various other national dual and tournament polls, respectively. Seven of the 10 Purdue starters earned rankings in the first NCAA Coaches Panel rankings of the season, highlighted by Kendall Coleman's No. 6 mark at 157 pounds and Griffin Parriott's No. 9 ranking at 149 pounds. Senior Max Lyon also took a considerable jump this week in a few of the polls after his team-best third victory of the season over a top-10 opponent at 184 pounds.
LAST TIME OUT
Purdue picked up a win in its final road dual of the regular season, downing No. 22 Michigan State at Jenison Field House 21-12. The Boilermakers won six of the 10 varsity contests and six of the eight extra matches over the Spartans, including bonus-point wins for Parriott and junior Parker Filius. Parriott had a huge third period on his way to an 11-2 major decision, while Filius notched his first technical fall of the year at 141 pounds. Lyon won the signature bout of the evening, rolling up over four minutes of riding time in a 6-1 decision over ninth-ranked Layne Malczewski at 184 pounds.
PURDUE NOTES
• Head coach Tony Ersland is in his seventh season at Purdue and is 59-50 in dual competition with the Boilermakers.
• Ersland wrestled for the University of Iowa from 1992-97, qualifying for the NCAA Tournament at 177, and competing on the highest scoring team at the NCAA Championships in history (170).
• The Boilermakers' 10 straight wins over the Hoosiers marks Purdue's longest win streak in series history and Ersland's six straight wins since becoming the Boilermakers' head coach is the longest for any coach at Purdue.
• The 10 straight Purdue wins is also the longest streak for either team in series history since Indiana won 10 in a row from 1976 to 1983, and the Boilermakers have now won 16 of the last 22 meetings, including six straight in West Lafayette, last falling in 2006.
• Through eight duals and 80 varsity matches this season, 50 of Purdue's 80 opponents (.625) have held national rankings.
• Senior Devin Schroder climbed to No. 2 in the country at 125 pounds via The Open Mat, TrackWrestling and WIN Magazine last week. It marks the second straight season the Boilermakers have had an individual move to No. 2 in the country, following Christian Brunner at 197 in 2019-20.
• With 38 back points this season, Schroder has eclipsed the 400-career back point mark and ranks second in Purdue history. He surpassed Scott Hinkel in his season-opening win in 2021, and how trails only Jake Patacsil, who owns 803 all-time.
• Junior Parker Filius notched his third career technical fall last weekend, dominating in a 19-2 victory over Jaden Enriquez. The win avenges a loss from Filius' freshman year when the two met at 149 pounds.
• Senior Griffin Parriott has only been able to wrestle a limited schedule in 2021, but is unblemished at 3-0, including last weekend's 11-2 major decision over Peyton Omania of Michigan State.
• With his 7-1 start to the season, sophomore Kendall Coleman is now 36-9 in his career and surpassed the 100-career takedown mark with his six-takedown effort at Illinois. He is one of the fastest Boilermakers in program history to 100 takedowns, hitting the mark in his 39th career match. Cashé Quiroga posted 124 takedowns in 40 matches as a freshman in 2009-10, while Jason Silverstein tallied 109 takedowns in 44 matches in 1998-99.
• Sophomore Thomas Penola is off to a 6-2 start at 197 pounds, returning to his natural weight after qualifying for the national championships at heavyweight in 2019-20. He is second on the team in takedowns and is tied for second on the team lead in dual team points this season.
• Senior Max Lyon's three wins this season have come over top-10 ranked opponents. He opened his season with a bang at 184 pounds, knocking off No. 7 Zach Braunagel 4-3 at Huff Hall, then topped Iowa's Nelson Brands 6-1, and most recently took out Michigan State's ninth-ranked Layne Malczewski 6-1. All seven of his opponents this season are currently ranked in the top-17 in the country.
• Freshman Jacob Rundell has wrestled a similarly rough schedule in his early Boilermaker career, with his five dual opponents ranked in the top-30 at 133 pounds. He was three seconds away from overtime against No. 23 Jordan Decatur of Ohio State, tying the score at the buzzer, but falling on 1:02 of riding time for the Buckeye sophomore, and earned his first varsity dual win last Friday at Michigan State, topping Jordan Hamden 5-1.
• The Boilermakers will wear a commemorative sticker on their headgear in 2021, honoring the late Morgan J. Burke, who served as Purdue's Athletics Director for 23 years and passed away in 2020.
