WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Big Ten conference office has announced Jena Otec as the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, following her performances versus Michigan and at Northwestern last week.
The honor marks Otec's second of the season (last: Oct. 18) and third of her career.
The Crystal City, Missouri, native put on the performance of her career in Purdue's 3-1 win vs. Michigan, notching 33 digs in the match. Not only was it a career-best and the second 30-dig performance this season for Otec, but the most digs by a Boilermaker in 12 years. Moreover, it ties as the most by a Power Five player in a four-set match this season (joined by Lauren Barnes).
Over the two matches, Otec averaged 5.63 digs per set on her way to totaling 45 digs. Her efforts as libero also helped to limit opponents to an average 1.64 attack %.
At Northwestern, Otec added 12 digs and a pair of aces to end the weekend with 159 career aces. Otec, the only Boilermaker this century to produce as many serves, owns the most in program history in 32 years.
No. 6 Purdue (22-5, 14-4 B1G) will close out the regular season this weekend in Holloway. First Purdue will play Indiana at 6 p.m. ET on B1G+, before taking on No. 11 Nebraska at 9 p.m. ET on Saturday night. The match against the Huskers will air live on Big Ten Network.
The NCAA Selection Show is slated for Sunday, November 28 at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
