Boilermakers Head to Big Ten Championships

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Purdue cross country team travels to the 2021 Men's and Women's Big Ten Cross Country Championships in State College, Pennsylvania, on Friday, October 29.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Purdue cross country team travels to the 2021 Men's and Women's Big Ten Cross Country Championships in State College, Pennsylvania, on Friday, October 29.
 
The conference championships meet begins with the men's 5.2 mile at 10:45 a.m. ET, followed by the women's 6k at 11:45 a.m., at Penn State's Blue/White Golf Course.

Nine men and eight women will represent the Boilermakers as they race for team and individual conference titles
 
In this week's USTFCCCA Great Lakes Region rankings, the men are No. 7 and the women are No. 9.
 
A LOOK BACK AT THE 2020 BIG TEN CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Last season, the men placed third and the women finished 10th at the Big Ten Championships. The men's team registered a top-four finish for the third consecutive year, a program-first since 1948. Curt Eckstein led the way in fifth place to mark the third year in a row a Purdue runner notched a top-five finish and earned All-Big Ten First Team honors. Emma Tate paced the women with a 22-place finish, in 21:13.2.
 
Due to COVID-19, the 2020 Big Ten Championships was held on January 30, 2021.
 
PURDUE AT THE BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Purdue men have won two Big Ten titles, in 1916 and 1941. The Boilermakers have recorded top-five finishes each of the past four years, coming in fifth in 2017, second in 2018, fourth in 2019 and third a year ago. 2017 marked the first time Purdue finished better than sixth since 1986.
 
The Boilermaker women's best Big Ten finish was second place in 1983, and Purdue also was third in 1981, its first Big Ten Championship.
 
Five men have won Big Ten titles, most recently by Matt McClintock in 2015. He set a Big Ten record in the 8k race with a time of 23:12.1.
 
LAST TIME OUT: STAN LYONS BULLDOG INVITATIONAL
The Purdue men won the Stan Lyons Bulldog Invitational as freshman Alex Frey claimed the individual title on October 22 in Carmel, Indiana. Frey was one of three Boilermakers to place in the top five, while all five runners finished in the top eight in the men's 8k. Purdue was first with 23 points, ahead of Butler's 32 points. The women earned a ninth- and 10th-place finish individually and did not compete for a team score on the 5k course.
 
In the men's 8k, Frey won with a personal-best time of 25:25.6. He was ahead of teammate Ryan Ruppert, who's mark of 25:25.1 earned him the runner-up finish and also was a personal-record. For the women, Haley Mansfield was ninth overall, in 19:42.3. Emma Keesling was right behind her in 10th with a time of 19:57.1.

Purdue is back in the state of Indiana for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in Evansville, Indiana, on Friday, November 12. The Boilermakers will be racing for a trip to the NCAA Championships.
