WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Divers Ben Bramley and Emily Bretscher, wrestler Max Lyon, and golfer Joe Weiler have all earned Academic All-District recognition for continuing to excel in all aspects of the student-athlete experience, giving Purdue honorees from three different sports in the at-large group for District 5.

Bramley, Bretscher, Lyon and Weiler have all maintained elite grade-point averages into their upperclassman years. All four Boilermakers were also Big Ten Distinguished Scholars and Academic All-Big Ten honorees during the 2020-21 school year. Bretscher was also Purdue Athletics' female recipient of the Big Ten Medal of Honor this year.

Emily Bretscher Senior 3.70 General Management
Max Lyon Senior 3.87 Industrial Management

Joe Weiler Senior 3.85 Industrial Engineering

Weiler was named Academic All-District for the second year in a row. Bramley and Bretscher are the first Purdue divers recognized since Academic All-American Jamie Bissett in 2015.

Bramley, Bretscher and Lyon all represented the Boilermakers at the NCAA Championships this season. Weiler finished top 10 at the NCAA Regional in Noblesville, Indiana, after claiming silver as the runner-up at the Big Ten Championships. Bramley (platform) and Bretscher (3-meter) were bronze medalists at Big Tens this year.

As regional honorees in District 5, all four Boilermakers advance to the national ballot from which the Academic All-America teams are selected. District 5 includes universities in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio.

Unlike many team sports, swimming & diving, golf and wrestling are part of the at-large group for the Academic All-District and All-America program. Each school is permitted to nominate only four male and four female student-athletes for consideration from sports like tennis, wrestling, golf, swimming & diving, ice hockey, crew, lacrosse and others. Nominees must be at least sophomores with a GPA of 3.30 and higher. Honorees are nominated and selected via a voting process open to members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Purdue swimming & diving has had at least one Academic All-District honoree every year since 2010. However, this year marks the first time since 2013 the Boilermakers have had both a male and female honoree from the pool in the same year. Swimmer Megan Johnson and Weiler did give Purdue a male and female representative on the at-large Academic All-District teams last year, which was also a first since 2013.

Lyon is a three-time NCAA Championship qualifier at 184 pounds, also earning three straight Academic All-Big Ten and NWCA Division I Scholar All-America honors. Ranked as high as No. 10 in the country at his weight, Lyon is a three-time placewinner at the Big Ten Championships and has climbed the podium three times at the U23 University Freestyle National Championships. Lyon earned his bachelor's degree in May and will exercise his extra year of eligibility for the Boilermakers in 2021-22.

Bretscher is also returning as a fifth-year senior in 2021-22. She was an All-American on 3-meter and platform at NCAAs this year, qualifying for the national championship meet in all three diving events for the second time in her career. She finished top 10 in all three events at Big Tens and ranks as Purdue's active career scoring leader at the conference championship meet. As a junior, she was the Big Ten champion on 3-meter and the Big Ten Diver of the Year.

Bramley won silver on the tower at the NCAA Championships, teaming up with Brandon Loschiavo for the first 1-2 finish by any university in any diving event since Auburn (also on platform) in 2005. It was his third career All-America honor. At Big Tens, he scored in all three diving events and became just the fifth Purdue diver (men and women) to medal in three consecutive seasons.

Weiler earned PING All-Region as well as All-Big Ten honors for the second year in a row. He led the team in stroke average (72.17), posting the fifth-best mark in program history. His runner-up showing at the Big Ten Championships was Purdue's highest finish since 2007. He placed among the top 10 at four tournaments and finished with 12 rounds of even-par or better (out of 24 played).
