PURDUE LINEUP & RANKINGS
The Boilermakers held at No. 18 in the NWCA Coaches Poll this week after last weekend's split, but took a hit in the national tournament polls. Seven of the 10 Purdue weight classes own national rankings in at least one poll, including top-10 rankings for Devin Schroder, Griffin Parriott and Kendall Coleman.
LAST TIME OUT
Purdue went 1-1 at a tri-dual with Minnesota and Rutgers at the RAC last Sunday, falling to the Golden Gophers 32-4, but bouncing back with an 18-15 win over the Scarlet Knights. Sophomore Thomas Penola was the lone Boilermaker to go 2-0 on the day, posting a major decision over Garrett Joles and a 4-0 decision over No. 27 Billy Janzer of Rutgers. Senior Devin Schroder was the difference in Purdue's win over Rutgers, their second straight in the RAC, racking up a 13-0 lead on No. 15 Nic Aguilar before earning his first fall of the year at 4:20.
PURDUE NOTES
• Head coach Tony Ersland is in his seventh season at Purdue and is 58-48 in dual competition with the Boilermakers.
• Ersland wrestled for the University of Iowa from 1992-97, qualifying for the NCAA Tournament at 177, and competing on the highest scoring team at the NCAA Championships in history (170).
• Through five duals and 50 varsity matches this season, 29 of Purdue's 50 opponents have held national rankings.
• Senior Devin Schroder climbed to No. 2 in the country at 125 pounds via The Open Mat, TrackWrestling and WIN Magazine last week. It marks the second straight season the Boilermakers have had an individual move to No. 2 in the country, following Christian Brunner at 197 in 2019-20.
• With 22 back points this season, Schroder has eclipsed the 400-career back point mark and ranks second in Purdue history. He surpassed Scott Hinkel in his season-opening win in 2021, and how trails only Jake Patacsil, who owns 803 all-time.
• With his 4-1 start to the season, sophomore Kendall Coleman is now 33-9 in his career and surpassed the 100-career takedown mark last weekend with his six-takedown effort at Illinois. He is one of the fastest Boilermakers in program history to 100 takedowns, hitting the mark in his 39th career match. Cashé Quiroga posted 124 takedowns in 40 matches as a freshman in 2009-10, while Jason Silverstein tallied 109 takedowns in 44 matches in 1998-99.
• Sophomore Thomas Penola leads the team with 22 takedowns, 57 total points and 19 dual team points through five matches, averaging 4.4 takedowns per match and 11.4 points per match. Fourty-three of his 57 points have come in the second and third periods.
• Senior Griffin Parriott made his season debut last weekend at Rutgers, starting the season 2-0 with a pair of narrow wins. Freshman Jacob Rundell saw his first career action as well, joining the starting lineup at 133 pounds, where he went 1-2 with a major decision.
• Junior Jared Florell could see his first action of the season this weekend, and his first career match at heavyweight after wrestling the last two seasons at 184 and 197 pounds.
• Senior Max Lyon opened his season with a bang at 184 pounds, knocking off No. 7 Zach Braunagel 4-3 at Huff Hall, and rose as high as No. 10 in nation via TrackWrestling, a career-high mark.
• The Boilermakers will wear a commemorative sticker on their headgear in 2021, honoring the late Morgan J. Burke, who served as Purdue's Athletics Director for 23 years and passed away in 2020.
