LINCOLN, Neb. – The Purdue men's tennis team opened the 2021 season Friday night at Nebraska with a come-from-behind 4-3 win over the Cornhuskers. Sophomore Michal Wozniak delivered the winning point at No. 3 singles.
The Boilermakers trailed following the opening doubles point, dropping matches at No. 1 and 2. Sebastian Welch and Santiago Galan held a 5-4 lead over Shunya Maruyama and Nic Wiedenhorn at No. 3 when play was halted.
Mateo Julio pulled the Boilermakers level at 1-1 with a dominant 7-5, 6-2 win over Victor Lozano at No. 1. After Nebraska retook the lead with a win at No. 4, Sebastian Welch came from behind in a second set tiebreak to oust William Gleason in straight sets at No. 2, 6-3, 7-6(x).
Milledge Cossu gave Purdue its first lead of the night and recorded the first win of his career at No. 6. The freshman rallied from a set down to defeat Patrick Cacciatore 1-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Nebraska tied it back up at 3-3 after a No. 5 win, turning all eyes to Michal Wozniak at No. 3. After Albert Sprlak-Puk took the opening set, the Poland international roared back to win with a third set breaker 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(3).
The Boilermakers will look to make it two in a row on Sunday with a road trip to Iowa at 1 p.m.
