CSCAA Scholar All-America Honors: Team / Individual
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Twenty-one members of Purdue swimming & diving were recognized as Scholar All-Americans by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America for their 3.5-plus grade-point averages in conjunction with their athletic accomplishments.
All six of Purdue's active divers – Ben Bramley, Emily Bretscher, Greg Duncan, Emily Meaney, Maggie Merriman and Maycey Vieta – during the 2019-20 season were recognized as CSCAA Scholar All-Americans.
Fifteen swimmers also garnered honorable mention Scholar All-America accolades. That group included Nikola Aćin, Elliot Cooper, Gabi Gomez Treig, Ryan Hrosik, Michael Juengel, Mallory Jump, Riley Kishman, Sylvia Kobylak, Ryan Lawrence, Nick McDowell, Natalie Myers, Jinq En Phee, Brett Riley, Maizie Seidl and Lindsay Turner.
All 21 Boilermakers maintained GPAs of at least 3.50 during the 2019-20 school year to help the Purdue men and women earn CSCAA Scholar All-America Team recognition yet again. Team GPAs continued to rise in the spring semester, with the women posting a 3.74 mark and the men also impressing with a 3.59 GPA. The CSCAA opted not to publish team GPAs this summer in conjunction with releasing the list of honorees so Big Ten and national ranks were unavailable.
Traditionally, qualifying for the NCAA Championships is what the CSCAA uses to classify Scholar All-Americans from those that receive honorable mention accolades. Because the Zone C Diving Championships were canceled Thursday afternoon of the NCAAs qualifier due to the coronavirus pandemic, All-America honors were utilized in place of the NCAA Championships qualification. Swimmers with an NCAA provisional qualifying time (B Cut) coupled with their minimum 3.5 GPA earn honorable mention recognition if he or she did not qualify for NCAAs.
Phee and McDowell graduated in May and were both four-year Scholar All-America honorees. Bretscher, Gomez Treig, Kishman and Myers are three-time honorees as juniors. Bramley, Duncan, Lawrence and Merriman were recognized for the second year in a row.
Purdue swimming & diving earned 37 Academic All-Big Ten (23 women, 14 men) and 23 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar (19 women, 4 men) honors for the 2019-20 school year. The women's 19 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars were the most in the Big Ten this year as well as a program record. Freshmen are not eligible for those awards, but they are for the CSCAA Scholar All-America accolades. Eight Boilermakers earned all three academic honors this year. The criteria for Big Ten Distinguished Scholar is a 3.7-plus GPA for the recently completed school year. Academic All-Big Ten is a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
