PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Purdue wrestling team put together an outstanding second session at the Big Ten Championships and are in fifth place with 77.5 points headed into Sunday's competition at the Rutgers Athletics Center. Junior Devin Schroder and freshman Kendall Coleman advanced to the Big Ten finals at 125 and 157 pounds, respectively, while eight individuals secured spots on the podium and seven have already locked up their automatic bids to the NCAA Championships.
"We put together a great day of wrestling," said head coach Tony Ersland. "There's still work left to do and we have some business to take care of tomorrow, but it's hard to not be pleased with everything our guys did out there today. We competed hard, won the majority of the positions and we're excited to get back out there and finish what we started."
Purdue's 77.5 team points are already the most the Boilermakers have scored at the conference championships since 2004, and the team's eight placewinners are their most since 2004 as well. Schroder and Coleman are the first Purdue wrestlers to advance to the finals since Colton Salazar in 2010, and mark the first Boilermaker duo to compete for the championship since Doug Withstandly and Ryan Lange reached the finals in 2004. Coleman is first Purdue freshman to compete in the Big Ten Championship finals, following Arnold Plaza at 121 pounds in 1947.
Schroder was dominant in his 6-0 semifinal win over sixth-seeded Michael DeAugustino of Northwestern, posting the match's only takedown in the second period and then riding the Wildcat freshman for nearly the final three minutes of the match. After a scoreless first period, Schroder escaped and scored in the second for a 3-0 lead, earning a stall warning against his opponent on the way. DeAugustino chose bottom in the third and Schroder was relentless in his work for a turn, getting two more stall calls for penalty points and then securing the riding time point. Schroder advances to face top-seeded and top-ranked Spencer Lee of Iowa in the finals.
Coleman battled out a close one against seventh-seeded Nebraska freshman Peyton Robb, avenging his injury default loss from the season with a 3-2 decision Saturday. Coleman scored the decisive points in the opening period, getting a body lock on Robb and nearly adding back points to his takedown for an early 2-0 lead. Robb escaped in the first and again in the second to tie the match, but Coleman scored the match-winner with an escape to start the third and held Robb off down the stretch for the win. Like Schroder, Coleman will meet the top-seeded and top-ranked wrestler in the nation in Northwestern's Ryan Deakin.
Senior Dylan Lydy came up just shy of joining them in the finals as he fell 5-4 to No. 2 seed Mark Hall of Penn State in the semifinals at 174 pounds. Both wrestlers scored a takedown and two escapes in the match, but Lydy was hit for two stall warnings within 10 seconds in the first period to result in the deciding point in the match. Lydy moves into the wrestlebacks where he'll face Michael Labriola of Nebraska in the consolation semifinals.
Joining Lydy in the consolation semifinals are senior Christian Brunner and juniors Griffin Parriott and Max Lyon. Brunner rebounded from his quarterfinal loss to top Illinois' Matt Wroblewski and Michigan's Jackson Striggow, using strong third periods in both matches to secure the wins and lock up his fourth straight trip to the NCAA Championships at 197 pounds. Parriott followed suit at 149 pounds, avenging a pair of regular-season losses to outperform his No. 10 seed. He scored in the first and third periods to take out No. 9 seed Yahya Thomas of Northwestern, 5-3, and then posted a third-period takedown to force overtime against No. 6 seed Cole Martin, where he snagged the 7-5 sudden victory.
Lyon followed the regular-season revenge tour at 184 pounds, using a first-period takedown and a strong ride to post a 4-2 decision over No. 5 seed Billy Janzer of Rutgers. He then accepted a medical forfeit from Michigan's Jelani Embree to advance to the consolation semifinals.
Sophomore Parker Filius and freshman Thomas Penola earned spots on the podium with wins to start Session II, but fell in the consolation quarters to move to tomorrow's seventh-place matches at 141 and 285 pounds. Filius snagged takedowns in the first period and third period as he topped Northwestern's Alec McKenna 6-4, while Penola poured it on Rutgers' Alex Esposito in a 12-1 major decision. Filius locked up his spot to the NCAA Championships, and will face No. 7 seed Dylan Duncan of Illinois on Sunday, while Penola will get a rematch of his tournament-opener against Illinois' Luke Luffman, with a spot in the NCAA field on the line.
Sunday's action starts at noon ET, opening with placement matches and the consolation semifinals. The seventh-place matches will follow with the championships rounds scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. and aired live on the Big Ten Network.
