ANN ARBOR, Mich. – On the opening day of the 2019 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships, Sarah Loesch picked up Purdue's first medal while the Boilermakers also sent six to Saturday's finals.
Loesch placed third in the weight throw. The senior rallied with her best throw coming in the final attempt, notching a distance of 69-07.50/21.22-meters.
Also earning a pair of fourth-place finishes was Jaret Carpenter and Jah Strange. Carpenter, who set the Purdue 3,000-meter record just weeks ago, timed in at 8:27.76 while Strange jumped 23-10.25/7.23-meters in the long jump.
"We started off with really good momentum and it mushroomed from there. Overall, we are in pretty good shape. Like I've said all season – we've got a young team, but a very talented team," said head coach Norbert Elliott.
With a combination of transfers, returners and a freshman making it out of the semifinals, only two are returners.
The 60-meter events will see a total of four move on. On the women's side, freshman Amaya Chadwick qualified for the women's 60-meter hurdles while veteran Autumn Heath earned her spot in the 60-meter dash. On the men's side, Samson Colebrooke (6.75) Waseem Williams (6.72) advanced in the dash.
Brian Faust advanced to the 600-meter finals, running the second-fastest time in Boilermaker history in the process. His time of 1:18.42 was good for third overall in the semifinals and will look to add a third program record to his arsenal.
Colebrooke punched his second ticket to the finals in the 200-meter dash, where the Bahamas native joined teammate Malcolm Dotson as the sixth fastest runner in Boilermaker history. Colebrooke matched Dotson's 2016 time of 21.31 in the event to qualify for the finals tomorrow at 3:35 p.m. ET.
In her first Big Ten Championship, freshman Chadwick matched her personal record in the 60-meter dash to advance to Saturday's finals. Chadwick crossed the finish line in 8.50 seconds to finish second in her heat and fifth overall.
