DUAL MEET INFORMATION
Purdue Men and Women at Michigan State
Friday, Jan. 11 at 3 p.m. ET
McCaffree Pool / East Lansing, Michigan
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue swimming & diving's first indoor meet at Michigan State in six years doubles as the Boilermakers' return to action after the traditional extended break from competition during the holiday season.
Friday's 3 p.m. matinee meet at MSU's McCaffree Pool represents Purdue's first head-to-head dual meet since Oct. 26 at Notre Dame. The Purdue men, women and divers haven't all competed at the same aquatic center together since hosting Tennessee and Wisconsin for a triple dual on Nov. 2 at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.
The Boilermakers' last visited East Lansing for a season-opening meet in October 2015. But that was an outdoor long course meet at MSU's IM Sports West Pool. The Spartans' indoor facility, McCaffree Pool, opened in 1959 and is the only six-lane pool remaining in the Big Ten. Purdue's last meet at McCaffree was in January 2013. But Michigan State has been a regular on the schedule this decade, visiting West Lafayette in January for co-ed duals in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2018.
Purdue's current seniors made their collegiate debuts in East Lansing in the fall of 2015. Danielle Auckley, James Boone, Alex Clarke, Cady Farlow, Joe Gardner, Jackson Higgins, Erik Juliusson, Taite Kitchel, Gavin McCulloch, Emily Meckstroth, Breanna Robinson, Joe Young and Eddy Zawatski are the active Boilermakers that raced at MSU's outdoor pool on an unseasonably cold Friday in October.
Meanwhile, Purdue has six Michigan natives on its current rosters – Emily Converse, Anna Giesler, Roxy Griffore, Riley Kishman, Ryan Lawrence and Kelsey Maccadino.
"I think it will be really fun. It's just a back to basics, strip it down, you're racing in six lanes with your best friends," Lawrence said regarding the throwback six-lane setup at McCaffree Pool.
The Purdue men's last meet at a six-lane pool was actually the 2014 Classic @ SMU. The Mustangs' historic Perkins Natatorium featured a six-lane pool, which was a big reason why the Classic @ SMU was an invite comprised of only the top nine student-athletes from the six teams in attendance. SMU's Robson & Lindley Aquatic Center opened in the fall of 2017 with a traditional eight-lane pool.
The fall semester ended on a high note for the Purdue men as they won the Hawkeye Invitational the weekend of Nov. 15 to 17. The Boilermakers won the three-day meet even with their divers competing at Texas that same week. Purdue's six divers competing at the USA Diving Winter Trials, held the week before Christmas in Atlanta, teamed up to win four medals.
December also featured final exams on campus for all student-athletes. With the Boilermakers remaining on campus for their winter training camp this year, team members were able to spend additional time at home the week of Christmas before returning to the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center for the final days of December. Winter training continued through the first weekend of January.
Next year, Purdue travels to Fort Lauderdale for its winter training trip during the semester break.
The Saturday, Jan. 26 co-ed dual meet vs. Indiana at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center is the Boilermakers' Senior Day meet. Twenty-two seniors, 11 from each team, will be recognized prior to the meet.
Active Boilermakers to win events vs. Michigan State last season included:
