SB Welcomes Fort Wayne, Penn State to Bittinger

The Boilermakers challenge the Mastodons on Wednesday  and face the Nittany Lions in a three-game Big Ten series April 5-7

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue softball hosts a four-game homestand this week, welcoming Purdue Fort Wayne (5-24, 0-6 Summit League) and Penn State (17-17, 2-4 Big Ten) to Bittinger Stadium.

The Boilermakers are set to challenge the Mastodons in a single game on Wednesday at 5 p.m. ET, while Purdue will face the Nittany Lions in a three-game Big Ten series April 5-7. First pitch on Friday is slated for 6 p.m., with Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at noon. All games are set to stream on BTN Plus.

Friday's game against Penn State will serve as Purdue's 2019 Strikeout Cancer Game, while Saturday's matchup will be this year's Purdue Softball Alumnae Game.

On Friday, the Boilermakers will hold a Purdue memorabilia auction at its series opening game. All proceeds of the auction will be donated to the Riley's Children's Hospital. Bidding will start at 5 p.m. ET and will close at the end of the fifth inning. Only cash and checks will be accepted. A list of the auction items can be found below.

For Saturday's festivities, Purdue will be honoring all alumnae in attendance of Game 2 against the Nittany Lions. Heading into the week, the Boilermakers are looking to bounce back from three losses to No.19/15 Minnesota this past weekend. The Big Ten series saw Purdue fall by scores of 5-1 in the first two games and 8-2 in the series finale.

The conference series was highlighted by senior Maddie Damon's performance in the circle. The Minnesota native pitched 4.2 innings of the relief through the first two games against the Gophers and earned her first start of the season in the series finale. Pitching a total of 11 innings, Damon dealt nine strikeouts, while limiting Minnesota to only one hit with no runs through the first two games.

At the plate, the Boilermakers were paced by senior Jenny Behan. The Purdue third baseman went 3-for-8 at the plate with two runs and an RBI.

Fort Wayne comes into Wednesday's contest looking to snap a 16-game losing streak. Overall, the Mastodons are 5-24 with a 0-6 showing in the Summit League. At the plate, the in-state foe is led by Lacey Wilzbacker with a .316 batting average and a team-best 24 hits. Morganne Denny adds depth to the Mastodon lineup with a team-high 13 RBI and three home runs.
In the circle, Shaina Eyre leads the pitching staff with 12 games started and a 4.90 ERA. She also leads Fort Wayne with 45 strikeouts in 79 innings pitched.

Penn State enters the week at 17-17 on the season following a sweep at the hands of No. 25 Wisconsin and are 2-4 in the Big Ten after taking two-of-three games at Michigan State to start conference play. The Nittany Lions are set to host Saint Francis (PA) in a doubleheader on Wednesday. The Boilermakers defeated Saint Francis, 6-2 at ECU's Pirate Clash in February. The win was highlighted by freshman Kasey Wilhoit, who went 4-for-4 with two runs.

Melina Livingston leads the Nittany Lions with a .368 average and six doubles, while Chelsea Bisi paces the offense with six home runs and 17 runs batted in. Overall, Penn State is hitting .262 as a team but average 3.6 runs per game.

The Nittany Lions will rely heavily on its pitching staff that has combined for a 2.74 ERA in 219.1 innings pitched. Bailey Parshall leads the staff with 132 strikeouts in 107 innings and a 2.47 ERA. Kylee Lingenfelter has a 2.14 ERA in 52.1 innings for Penn State.
