WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue will be well-represented at next week's 118th U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill as one current golfer and one former golfer will compete in one of golf's biggest events.
Senior Timmy Hildebrand and 2017 grad Fernando Barco will be two of 312 players competing in the most-grueling test in amateur golf.
Competitors will play 18 holes on both Monday and Tuesday with the top 64 finishers advancing to match play beginning on Wednesday.
Wednesday's first round of match play consists of 32 matches. Thursday's action will be the second (16 matches) and third rounds (eight matches) of match play. Friday's play will consist of the quarterfinals, the semifinals will be hosted on Saturday and the 36-hole championship match will be on Sunday. Saturday and Sunday's action will be televised nationally by Fox Sports, while Fox Sports 1 will broadcast match-play action from Wednesday to Friday. All of the match-play competition will be contested at Pebble Beach.
Hildebrand, who qualified as an alternate for this year's event, will be playing in his second straight U.S. Amateur, both coming in the state of California. Last year's event was contested at Riviera Country Club and Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles.
Hildebrand has had a strong career at Purdue entering his senior campaign. He was third on the team last year in stroke average (73.63) and currently ranks ninth on Purdue's career stroke average list (73.69). He enters his senior season with seven career top-10 finishes and 29 of his 75 rounds have been at even or under par.
Hildebrand will tee off Monday on Pebble Beach hole No. 10 at 11:01 a.m. ET, and off Spyglass Hill hole No. 1 at 4:16 p.m. ET, on Tuesday.
Barco, meanwhile, enters the U.S. Amateur on a roll this summer, having won three tourmaments. The Lima, Peru, native won the Mexican Amateur, the Terra Cotta Invitational and the Peru Amateur. He is currently ranked No. 54 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR).
This will be Barco's fourth straight U.S. Amateur appearance, competing in last year's event at Riviera, the 2016 competition at Oakland Hills and in 2015 at Olympia Fields outside Chicago.
The USGA called his pairing as one of "Five Groups to Watch" next week at Pebble Beach. He is paired with two-time Canadian Amateur champion and Oklahoma State All-American Zach Bauchou (21st in WAGR ranking) and Jovan Rebula (58th in WAGR ranking), winner of the British Amateur and Ernie Els' nephew.
Barco was a two-time PING All-Midwest Region selection at Purdue, finishing his career sixth on Purdue's stroke average list (73.61) and seventh on the single-season chart as a senior (72.66).
Barco will tee off Monday off hole No. 10 at Spyglass Hill at 11:22 a.m. ET, and off No. 1 at Pebble Beach at 4:37 p.m. ET, on Tuesday.
