WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue senior punter Joe Schopper was named second-team Academic All-American on Monday.
Schopper was recognized by CoSIDA for his combined performance on the field and in the classroom. He is the first Boilermaker so honored since center Robert Kugler was a second-team Academic All-American in 2015.
Schopper is pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and boasts a 3.83 grade-point average. He earned third-team All-Big Ten honors by the coaches and was an honorable mention selection by the media. Schopper ranks sixth in the Big Ten with an average of 43.1 yards per punt (tied for sixth on the Purdue season list). Of his 56 attempts, 27 have been fair caught (48 percent), while 21 have come to rest inside the opponent's 20-yard line (38 percent). He has 11 punts of 50-plus yards.
On the Purdue career lists, Schopper ranks second with 243 punts and tied for sixth with a 41.0-yard punting average.
Schopper was co-recipient of the football team's Noble Kizer Award, which is presented to the junior or senior letterwinner with the highest level of academic achievement. He is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
Purdue is preparing to play Auburn in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl in Nashville on Dec. 28. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. ET (12:30 p.m. local time), and the game will be televised by ESPN.
Purdue has accounted for 11,000 tickets - 3,000 more than the bowl's original allotment - assuring the Boilermakers of their largest bowl game crowd since 20,000 Purdue fans attended the 2004 Capital One Bowl in Orlando, Florida.
