WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - For the second time in as many weekends, Purdue wrestling is traveling east for a loaded two days of competition. The 17th-ranked Boilermakers will take on Bloomington at noon ET, followed by Drexel at 2 p.m., at the Journeymen Northeast Duals on Saturday. Then on Sunday, they'll take part in the Journeymen Collegiate Classic starting at 9 a.m. Both events will be held at Hudson Valley Community College's McDonough Sports Complex.
Purdue climbed one spot in this week's NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll to No. 17. The move establishes another high for the Boilermakers under fifth-year head wrestling coach Tony Ersland and marks the highest position they've reached on the poll since being ranked 14th to conclude the 2012-13 season.
Saturday's duals are the first of the season for Purdue. The Boilermakers enter the second weekend of competition off of a strong performance at the Princeton Open with eight placewinners, including the 133- and 174-pound champions in Ben Thornton and Dylan Lydy, respectively.
Purdue leads the all-time series with both of its opponents, Bloomsburg 4-1 and Drexel 2-0. The last time the Boilermakers saw Bloomsburg (11/13/16), they extended their lead in the all-time series to 4-1. It has been 10 years since they last wrestled Drexel, taking a 2-0 lead in the series with a 35-6 victory on Jan. 4, 2008.
The Journeymen Collegiate Classic's format is unique. Each weight will have three tiers (A, B, C) with each tier competing in a 5-6 man round-robin style bracket. Participating NCAA Division I teams include Appalachian State, Army, Bloomsburg, The Citadel, Edinboro, Hofstra, No. 6 Lehigh, Lock Haven, No. 8 NC State, Oklahoma, Utah Valley, West Virginia and No. 21 Wyoming. The field also includes Long Island (Division II) and Ithaca (Division III).
