WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue men's golfers Fernando Barco, Brian Carlson and Austin Eoff will compete in one of the most-prestigious amateur championships in the country this week, teeing off in the Western Amateur outside Chicago Tuesday.
The tournament runs from Tuesday to Saturday at the Knollwood Club in Lake Forest, Illinois. One-hundred and fifty-six amateurs will begin their quest for one of the most-prestigious amateur titles in competitive golf. Past Western Amateur champions include Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, Justin Leonard, Curtis Strange, Ben Crenshaw, Andy North, Scott Verplank and Hal Sutton.
Competitors will play 18 holes each on Tuesday and Wednesday, then will be trimmed to the low 44 scores and ties for the final two rounds. The remaining competitors will play 36 holes on Thursday to determine the low 16 finishers. Match play will then determine the 114th Western Amateur champion, concluding on Saturday.
Barco will lead Purdue's contingent after winning medalist honors at last week's U.S. Amateur qualifier at the Kampen Course with a 36-hole total of 8-under par 136. He also won the Abierto Golf Para Todos earlier this summer by nine shots. Barco, who also won the 2015 event, fired a three-round total of 8-under par 208 (72-69-67) at the Lima Golf Club.
Barco will tee off at 7:20 a.m. CT off tee No. 10 in the first round and is paired with Chelso Barrett (TCU) and Braden Thornberry (Ole Miss). His tee time will be 12:20 p.m. CT on Wednesday.
Eoff has also had a strong summer winning his second straight Arkansas Amateur championship and also advancing to the U.S. Amateur after finishing tied for first at a qualifier last week in Arkansas. Eoff is the current leader in the Arkansas State Golf Association Player of the Year race by a healthy margin.
Eoff is paired with Brendon Jelley (Oklahoma State) and Garrett Rank (Canada, NHL Referee), and will tee off hole No. 1 at 8:30 a.m. CT on Tuesday and No. 10 at 1:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday.
Carlson, who will be an alternate for the U.S. Amateur in two weeks, has placed in the top five at both the Northeast Amateur and Monroe Amateur this summer, as well as a 14th-place finish at the New England Amateur.
Carlson is paired with Franklin Huang (Stanford) and Brandon Pierce (LSU). The trio will tee off at 12:30 p.m. CT on Tuesday and 7:30 a.m. CT on Wednesday.
All three players were named to the PING All-Midwest Region team in May.
